Let's compile a list of things NEVER to do on forums!

Be careful when giving users an incentive to post like revenue sharing. This leads to lots of low-quality posts.

It can also lead to loads of good posts though if you have rules and inforce them hard and delete all low quality posts.

LOL i realised the forum I am most active on does a lot of these things...LOL...the problem is the admin on the site who isn't that active though luckliy the moderators are very active

NEVER make posts that are private and only staff members can see it that bash other members.

I'm part of a site, and when I got promoted to Moderator, I got a wonderful suprise. I was able to see the staff section. Much to my dismay, they have a thread thats 6 pages long bashing this poor member. That's a horrible thing to do. If you want to bash someone, then remove them from your forum. This poor woman was asking for advice on something. And the rest of the staff was calling her all sorts of obscene names, calling her stupid and ignorant, blah blah blah. Keep that junk in your own private emails.

Also, as admins and moderators, don't act like immature little kids. (obvious one here...but some people just don't get it). One admin on this same site i was talking about before, is a 30 something year old woman, who makes up false screenames on various messengers, and harasses people she doesn't like. Then she posts it on the forum. Why nobody has reprimanded her or demoted her is beyond me. It's extremely unattractive, and there is no excuse.

it might be worth posting some of these points on the blog

or just put all the points in the 1st post -🙂-

i gotta say i so wish i had read this thread when i had my old forum, i made alot of the mistakes which were pointed out on this thread. i do see im still doing a couple on my new forum too...too many catagories when starting out...and it does make my forum look empty. i spent too much time creating it all though, guess i will just have to try harder to get some posters.
i think this is the most important thread on this site! this should be some mandatory reading for anyone starting a forum jmho
its good to learn from your mistakes, way better to learn from someone elses.

Ooh I got one. ALWAYS back up your forums - at least like once a week or so. It's really important, if something happens, then you dont have the backups, etc. I used to run a game and didnt back up for the first couple of weeks. There was a rollback and everyone got pissed and i didn't back up and lost a lot of members.

Dont meddle with coding you dont understand, your site might display the fatal error code the next time you purge the cache...and yeah I speak from my own past on that.
