This is a lesson to be learned. This summer when we were on a trip to the outskirts, we stopped by a restaurant for breakfast. As we parked, we noticed the SUV beside our car with people around it. Those people are on their way to a resort and like us, they made a stopover.... only to be locked out of their car whose alarm system automatically locked the door when everyone was already outside and the key was still in the ignition. Worse, the engine was still running. The owner said that she shut the door temporarily and was really surprised that they were locked out. Their recourse was to call home to send someone to bring the spare key - it was a brand new SUV that they bought just the other day.

With that in mind, we are now developing the habit of not closing the door when the driver goes out. Let it stay ajar just for safety. With that habit, the danger of being locked out will be avoided.

They didn't have a keyless entry option on it? Seems kinda weird for a new machine.
Thankfully my trucks have such an option so if it were to ever happen that I was locked out it wouldn't be hard to get back in.

Don't newer vehicles have the pin code to unlock the doors?

That is odd, and I suspect there was something else going on.

My car, which is a 2006, will not lock if the keys are in the ignition, let alone if the engine is still running.

I have been locked out though. Pulled my key halfway out once, stepped outside to get gas, and it locked on me for antitheft. I had to call the police to come and unlock it for me. I was very gracious they came and helped!

We have done that a few times accidentally before, but the vehicle never was on while the keys were locked inside of it though.
