would you register a long .com name over a shorter .io domain name? In terms of SEO would that have any impact on my site?

for instance like the below:
  • examplesite.com
  • example.io

I prefer generic TLDs rather than using country specific TLDs unless I'm using the TLD for the country I live in. So I'd opt for .com or a .io domain but it also depends how long the .com domain is. If it's too long then it'll turn me away from using it.

That’s what I was thinking too but then again the .com is one of the hardest TLds to find a available domain mainly because of many individuals domain squatting. I too hate long .com domains those turn me away too. Then again what other TLDs can people with serious website ideas turn to?

I'll always go with .com, .net, or .org over the lesser known domain extensions. Of the two letter domain extensions, .io has been very trendy over the years though.

True this domain extension has been trendy specially in the startup market. But does this extension hurt SEO of a website?

No, .io is a very popular TLD, especially within the tech industry.

.io is definitely gaining popularity in recent years. If it looks easy to spell out and say out loud I would go with .io for example justgo.io as opposed to justgowebsite.com

If you’re trying to appeal to the mass market and plan on generating income and host high traffic to your website I believe a .com will always have a little more credibility at a glance. That may change in the future but presently I think this is true.

I prefer dot com because it is cheaper to register and renew. Dot io cost three times more than dot com.
