I think the keywords I've used on my site are too broad and ambitious. I want to narrow it down using long tail keywords and maybe I can rank higher on those then the ones I currently am using. My question is, is it a good idea to change all my keywords on roughly 50 article posts? I want to do this but I don't know if it's the right thing to do. Or should I just focus on better keywords starting from the present. I'm very newb like with SEO as you can tell. Thanks for any advice!

I personally think it's better to start fresh than to go behind yourself and 'fix' things. But I have no idea how search engines would react to you doing the latter.

Well it's not so much fixing things it is just rewriting the posts with better seo. Which is a crapload of work. It would actually be easier to just write new content but I'm willing to put in the extra work if it will increase traffic drawn by my old posts.

Was kind of looking for someone who could tell me if this is a good or bad idea and why. Normally I would agree with your philosophy but I don't want to miss out on a chance to get more traffic for these articles which are really under performing...

Long tail keywords are no harm to your website. They have relative low searches, but helps you rank good in search engines. I suggest you to make a ratio of 80% with your generic keywords and the rest 20% with long tail keywords.

This will help your website to rank in search engines.

Thanks! So say I change 20% of my keywords to long tail. How will search engines react to this... will it take time?

Also, I use Yoast for wordpress so essentially I will be changing the keywords in 10 of my 50 articles (Yoast only allows 1 main keyword per post) and going into the future I will try to keep the ratio you mentioned in place. Again thanks for the advice as I haven't heard of this approach before...

Just keep in mind that long tail doesn't invariably mean less competitive. You should do some keyword research, if you haven't already.

Good point, yeah I've been researching a little but I should put in a more thorough effort... will help in the long run!

You might want to do that but also consider the competition from your competitors. It's hard to rank a KW especially when it's broad and has high competition. Use the Google keyword tool or Google Keyworld Planner to find some KW that you think you can use for your website to rank. 🙂

Choose Long Tail keyword that has low competition. Long tail keywords are always easy to optimize if they have low competition.
