Looking for a new laptop.

Whats your Budget ??? and what about screen size? 13 inch ? 15 inch ? etc...

Also how ever good the "Acer" specs may look like. I myself owned an Acer and so has my sister and my brother all differnt types ... Withen a few months they all broke. Mine lasted 2 months longer as I gave my laptop alot of care so I suggest staying away from Acer. Toshiba are good laptops but my mother has one and its been breaking on her 3 months after she bought it, problems seem to be things such as it shutting down its self randomly, not booting up properly , Blue screen , sometimes unable to connect to the internet.

Or you could look at : http://www.dell.com/us/p/configuration- ... ice&~ck=mn and customise your own laptop and choose what specs to give it. For Dell I would also recommend a "Dell XPS" , try customising that ?

The links he provided were all for ~15 inch screens, so I assume that's the size he wants. A budget, however, would be nice.

Also, what do you plan on using the laptop for?

He mentioned he needs : Requirements: 4GB+ RAM, around 500GB Hard Drive.
20FP per recommendation.

I guess this would suggest he would need a high performance / powerfull laptop probably for Gaming or other things.

I would strongly advise avoiding HP. I have owned 2 of them personally, and in my family we have 5 total. Each one has something wrong with it that happened after the warranty expired. The problems range from cracked hinges (HP recalled it AFTER I paid to get mine fixed), defective dvd burners, and LCD cables that go bad after a while.

I can fix most issues myself, as I am an IT person, but the fact that I have to pay a crapload of money on something I paid a lot for to begin with is just ridiculous . The two I have had were the dv9000 and the dv7. Both costed around $1400 (not cheap by any means!).

My third laptop is currently a Dell. It feels rather cheap and doesn't have as many features as the HP, but it seems to be working a lot better. No issues so far and it's been about 10 months.

It isn't in your list and might be a little over $500, but I would highly recommend it. You can probably find it cheaper at best buy or another online retail site instead of ordering directly from Dell.

I was looking at this laptop. Does it look good?
It looks pretty good, yes. Keep in mind that "Refurbished" means that someone else owned it previously and it was reconditioned so it isn't brand now. The only thing I can say might be bad about it, is the battery may be used a bit so you will most likely not get the battery time listed (unless they put a new battery in, I'm not sure how that works with refurbished computers).

4GB of ram should be sufficient for average use. I usually assume 2GB for the operating system (which may be a bit high, but I'd rather not underestimate). That leaves you 2GB for programs/apps, which is plenty for things like Photoshop and video editors. If you plan on doing a lot of gaming, you may want to consider a bit more like 6GB.

The other thing I'd like to point out is that it has an Intel GMA chipset for graphics. That means it's on-board (not a dedicated graphics card), and will use system resources (such as ram) since it doesn't have its own. It will be fine with almost everything the average person would use, but again with the gaming, you will notice performance decrease. It's difficult to find a cheaper laptop with dedicated graphics though, I had to settle on one with the Intel Accelerator because I couldn't afford the ones I wanted. It does have an LED display which is great. They are nice, bright, efficient, and are pretty much the future of flat screen displays.

Summary: Great computer for everything but gaming 🙂

The problems you are reported are software issues, that have nothing to do with the laptop company itself. I have had a acer laptop that i used personally for a year and then gave to my brother who has use it for the past 2 years.

@OP Whats your price range, what screen size are you wanting, anything specific you using it for?
