aka the members you love to hate.

They join your forum yet despite logging in several times a week they never make a post.

Who am I talking about? The lurkers of course.

On the forum I use there is a mod which is called 'Irritate the lurkers' which you use to place a message above topics the member is reading.

The wording I used was: Hello member with 0 posts. Would you like to get rid of this rather annoyong message? If so all you have to do is start making a few posts.'

What are your thoughts on Lurkers?

Yea I hate when people do that. It really bugs me. Its like they just registered to sit there. But at the same time they usually don't make crap spam posts.

I rather lurkers any day before trolls.

Lurkers are always a hope for me, since they keep coming back, so there must be something the are interested about the place. Of course, zero post lurkers are most of the time fishy, specially when you have member posting areas, those are the ones I don't feel comfortable with.

I feel lurkers are only waiting for someone to post something good so they can copy and paste. =\

Lurkers are fine. Never bothered me. They will post when they want to. If not, then oh well. Who cares?

I think of it as,
If they keep coming back, they are going to get hooked..
And than they will want to be part in the conversations.
Just wait, dont pester them.
Some of my top posters were originally lurkers.

My thoughts.

If you start a forum, then you've become a beggar (sorta). You're the one who has to convince other people to come, so it's you who are the one begging. The people who visit your forums and/or register have absolutely no obligation to post whatsoever. And a lot of people can change their minds suddenly, such as they may not have time for it, or decided they didn't wish to become a part of the community afterwards.

Why should I complain? If they registered, they increased my stats a little bit. And at least they took the time to do so. More stats may mean a chance for other people to join who do actually become active. Every little bit counts.

I have had lurkers on my first forum for three months now.

Not even an introduction post.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. I like your reference to being the "begger". Nice one.

Who really cares, people join forums all of the time and never post, it's a fact, there's no way to make them post, just deal with it.

I am what you call a 'lurker' on some quite big forums, and theres nothing wrong with it. Sometimes I just like to read discussions or if someone is offering a download then I might register just to say thanks.

To be honest, I didn't expect to get over 400 posts here at FP.

Dude, you have to make some nice topics to get them interested or to ''convert the lurkers to posting members.'' I lurk on quite a few forums because there is nothing to interest me there. I just sign in every once in a blue moon hoping that someone with an IQ over 90 might have something to say. I tend to be wrong every time.

Precisly why I lurk on forums as well. If a topic doesn't interest me as much, then I'll just have a look-see around the forum and then leave. If I enjoy a given topic, then there's a high possibility that I'll stay around and be an active member.

Sometimes I mind lurkers, and other times I don't. Strange of me, I know... Maybe if my forum post count is lower I'll mind it more than if it is higher, although I ought to know better that they probably won't post much if any till I actually start getting topics around there.
