I'm trying to come up with an idea that is unique and sets a forum apart.
I have a base idea that is a good start, but so many forums have the elements. I want something that makes the forum unique.
What are ways to make a forum design unique?
Thank you
I mean, I know the logo sets it apart. The images too, but how else?
Like ztg stated, it does matter what the niche is. How about the following:
--> Think of something that you like, or an interesting idea and expand it into something bold. Make it the center of your design.
--> Think of personal prefences. What are your favorite colors? What do you like about your favorite site?
--> Imagine your favorite website. Now, think of what you dislike about it and what you would change. Look at it's design, style and layout. Where do your eyes go first? Think of that!
--> Going aginst the above bullet, think of a site that you like. Use what yo like the most about it and try and build it into your theme. Like the old saying goes, the best ideas are taken.
Thank you. I I have ranks made and the topic icons. I don't think the grass idea would work.
Plus it isn't my forum, I'm just the theme designer.
Any ideas for template?<br /><br />-- January 11th, 2013, 8:57 am --<br /><br />Thank you. I I have ranks made and the topic icons. I don't think the grass idea would work.

I won't repeat what the others have said, they did have good advice though.
Making a layout like what you're showing in the OP won't get you far. You're extremely limited there, and for the same reason you don't (or shouldn't) sketch out a form design on a paper, you shouldn't do this. It's okay for a basic idea, but it's really not anything that should be shown. You need color, styling, effects, etc. to make your theme stand out and be great. I've noticed a lot of themes, particularly on phpbb and even mybb, are all basic, very little custom styling and they're almost like the same theme with some hex code changes.
Dig into photoshop, gimp or whatever you use (though you should one of the two, gimp if money is an issue) and start designing. You may go through several drafts before you get something, but it will work a lot better than how you're doing it now. Design how you want the site to look live, with your colors, your images, etc. all in place. Everything doesn't have to be perfect by no means, but you need enough to make coding easier and give others an idea of what you are going for when you ask for help.
That's why I do the basic paint Draft, to get the layout. Then gimp then coding. I I want to know how to make the layout in particular unique. I've got an idea for colors. The thank you very much for the help. I I may just stick with this and the other ideas I've collected
Making a forum layout unique is not an easy task as there are lots of elements that have to be positioned in specific places. When trying to change things you really need to consider the forum users access over stuff that looks cool or different. I suggest you instead focus on quality design instead of unique layout.
