making free scripts, mods, software a good way to promote?

Would more people come to a website, forum, or blog on a regular basis if it has free scripts, mods, or software for people to download for helping them manage their forum, or other type of website?

I notice a few blogs which give a way free plug-ins for people to download and install to their Wordpress blog. They seem to get a lot of comments and traffic.

yes it would increase traffic, make some half decent ones and slap your copyright all over it and you will have a few new members rolling in 😉

For sites like that, coming there on a regular basis depends on how many daily updates you have. If you have 1 mod per week, then I only need to download it once and not really need to come back.
