It all really depends,

what service or product do you have? Most people live off of making Mods and Themes for xenforo if you know how to code?

Adsense, having your community have some forms of premium package(s) which various features, sometimes having others pay to have their links on your website can work (if you have a high PR ranking), and other times it can be just down to having donations and trying to get something that your community wants to back.
