How strict are you when you are making rules? Do you make sure you include everything? Is there things you add that may never happen? Do you just include them so they don't happen?

You should have two. Forum rules and Terms of Service. Forum rules should cover at least post content (including behaviour), graphics (avatar, sig) and advertising. TOS should cover legal matters regarding the forum and what results in what.

I totally agree but some forums don't really need a TOS. It depends what the genre is about.

TBH, if a forum doesn't have a TOS, then you aren't taking it seriously enough. Your TOS should be detailed and have no flaws, whereas your forum rules cover those above aspects, but can refer to the TOS.

Since its hosted on HawkHost servers, there TOS should prevail, like so with many forums. BTW, FP may be serious, but it isn't a large forum.

Well then that part is most likely for hosts but even their hosts would have a TOS.

All of my communities are laid back and meh whatever happens happens, However I do keep some major things in check like no racism ect..

I have rules, but they are kept simple and easy to read. Just about stuff like no personal attacks, nothing NSFW etc. Also mentions no advertising threads 🙂

Basically, rules should be in place to keep spam, and other unwanted undies from being posted on your forum. A TOS is what is required of someone that helps them know the main stuff that you should probably not post without getting banned.

All forums have a TOS, it is that thing that you have to read when you register. 😛

I try and create my rules to cover the basic things (language, pornography, spam etc), and a little more. I try to create them so people can't find loopholes, too.

My rules are the same rules that I have had since my PB days, nearly 6 years ago. Most were added as things had happened on the board, and others were loosely based on the TOS.

At first glance, I come across as super strict, but if a guest reads around on the forum for a bit before joining, and just observes the way I interact with the members there then they will see that that couldn't be farther from the truth. They will see that I am a very nice, friendly, and very laid back person with a delightfully dry, sarcastic, and horribly inappropriate sense of humor that would make a sailor blush.

Truth be told, I will treat you, as you me, and the members on my forum. If you are courteous, then you will be treated the same. If you act like an a**hole, then you will be treated as one.

Having dealt with a fair few annoying trolls in my day, and having taken a few legal classes last year, I've become a huge stickler for well laid out rules that cover everything.

Hortorian Forums Rules

By registering at Hortorian Forums you agree to the following rules. Every action you take on this forum signifies a continued acceptance of the rules. These rules are under constant revision. It is the recommendation of the staff of Hortorian Forums (henceforth known as HF) that you regularly familiarise yourself with these rules. If you break them, you, solely, are responsible. Membership of this forum is a privilege and not a right. Any abuse will result in temporary restrictions and perhaps permanent removal of this privilege.

Registration:

This forum only allows one account per person. Registration of secondary accounts will result in the original account being temporarily banned and the duplicate account(s), permanently banned. If the secondary accounts have been created to avoid disciplinary action, all will be subject to a permanent ban. In the rare case that you are experiencing technical difficulties with your original account, you may then and only then create a second account to contact an administrator.

Sharing accounts is forbidden as it is an annoyance to members and staff. If there are two people on the same computer using HF, use different accounts.

Hortorian Forums does not guarantee our members the right to change their username. We therefore advise you to pick a name you are comfortable with. Make sure the username you pick is appropriate. Inappropriate usernames will be changed by the staff to whatever we see fit.

Under the US COPPA act we require all children under the age of 13 to give proof of Parental Consent in order to use this website. HF and its staff are not responsible for any intentional circumvention of this law by under age parties.

Conduct:

All members must behave civilly and respectfully when using this board. While we understand that there is a broad difference of opinion here, we encourage you to not let this develop beyond civil debating. Flaming, harassing and belittlement of members and staff members will not be tolerated.

Profile:

Member profile content should be appropriate for all age groups. Do not include excessive gory or sexual content in your profile or the profile of others. There is no distinction whatsoever between an avatar, a signature, a member bio or a comment.

Avatars

The maximum avatar size is 100 pixels by 100 (100x100). The forum software resizes all uploaded avatars.

Signatures

Signatures should be 400 pixels by 200 (400x200). This includes text and images. Furthermore, to be fair to those on slow connections, only one signature image is permitted.

Signatures may not contain religious or political content, or links to such content. Links to Fraudulent websites or scams are also forbidden, as are misleading links of any kind even in jest (such as a rick-roll).

Breaches of these rules will result in your signature being deleted. Further action may be taken, depending upon the severity.

Posting:

HF is a writing forum, and thus we insist on our members using proper English when posting. This includes, proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. If English is not your native language, please tell us and we will exercise a certain amount of lenience when enforcing this rule.

Trolling and spamming are completely forbidden. Trolling is the act of posting abusive, disruptive and argumentative messages designed to instigate an argument. Spamming is the act of posting low content, off topic and annoying messages. Make sure all of your posts contribute positively to the threads they are in. Low content posts are only allowed in certain forum games.

Double posting and bumping are forbidden. If you have accidentally double posted due to a connection problem, please delete the unintentional post.

When posting a new thread, please make sure it is in the relevant forum/subforum. Before posting, please make sure that there are no active threads on the same topic. The search function is there for that use. Make sure that your thread is interesting and will generate discussion. If it fails to do this, it will be closed.

Please keep all discussion regarding religion, sexuality and theories of science to the forum entitled ‘'Mature Discussion’’. This is in light of a broad difference of opinions on these matters and the staff’s wish to keep the peace between the members.

Topics and posts that amount only to advertising are forbidden on this forum.
The staff team are the ultimate judge of what is and isn’t advertising. If in doubt, contact a staff member via PM.

The Private Messaging System:

The Private Messaging (PM) System, like all the services offered by this forum, is a privilege, not a right and is not to be abused. Advertisement of services other than those of Hortorian.com is not permitted. Standard respect and conduct rules apply.

Disciplinary Action:

HF handles disciplinary action on a case to case basis. Depending upon the severity of the offense the penalties can involve anything from a reprimanding PM, to permanent banishment from the forums. If you have any specific questions about our disciplinary procedure, feel free to PM a Moderator. Should you find the response unsatisfactory, feel free to contact an Administrator from the list below

Updates to the rules.

As stated above, these rules are subject to constant change and revision. By registering and on this forum you agree to follow these rules and any updates to them. You are advised to familiarise yourself with them regularly. When an update is made, a thread will be posted in the ‘'News and Announcements’’ forum, where a staff member will explain what changes have been made.

Many would say that I'm going too far here, but experience would speak to the contrary.
