I was thinking about this yesterday when scanning through my iPod and saw that I listen to mostly male voices but I have a folder for women's music and I don't listen to it as often as all the other music. My Opera folder of course is all women because I use that to practice LOL
Totally depends on what the song is going for. Things like Dream Pop, Ambient Pop, & Art Pop all sound miles better with a female singer than a male one (although a lot of guys in Art Pop can have pretty high pitched vocals that are almost as good, like Frank Ocean)
Funky & Garage House all gotta be women for me, but Deep house I'd say is 50/50 I've definitely heard a lot of male vocals that worked really well in this genre.
Then things like Doom/Drone metal I would usually favor a guy vocalist. Ozzy had the perfect doom voice IMO, and then I don't know if I've ever heard a women vocalist for pure Drone metal that wasn't something like choir vocals
Then you have things like Trance which both guys & girls often sound AWFUL in. I've definitely heard some great vocal trance, a lot of A&B's old classics come to mind, but it's sooooo easy for either gender to just sound like a desperate fool in it.
I share this view. I’m into music more for the instruments behind the vocals. Vocals just add a bit of oomph to them. As long as the vocals flow well with the instruments, I have no complaints.
As long as the song is good it doesn't matter to me. Besides, I'm forced to listen to a lot of pop music between my daughter or my girlfriend. I don't really get to listen to what I want lol. No one likes my music 🤣
