I don't really need a Virtual Private Server right now since none of my websites get a lot of traffic or run forum software which require a lot of server resources which requires a VPS web host, but should I get a managed or unmanaged VPS when I get more traffic, or require better web hosting from a VPS, or dedicated web host.

I read somewhere that a magaged VPS is easier to use, but more restrictive. Managed VPS also cost more, but come with technical support.

Unmanaged regular VPS are cheaper, but sometimes there is no technical support for some things, and no back up software installed by default, and you need to learn UNIX command lines to run a VPS sometimes.

Is learning how to manage a VPS server hard for a newbie?

Are you an experienced server admin? familiar with the command line? securing your box? able to configure php/mysql/curl and anything else you need? If no, then get it managed.
An inexperienced server admin using an unmanaged box is asking for trouble.

Sadly, no, the only experience I have with web hosting is shared web hosting from 1and1 which is extremely user friendly because it has its own easy to use control panel.

I think managed is the way to go for me since I never configured a server before.

Is managed VPS similar to shared web hosting, but a lot more RAM, CPU, and space for storing stuff.

I would recommend getting a managed VPS. That is just my opinion. Or you can wait till you become more of a server technician, then order an unmanaged.

Definitely get a managed VPS, unmanaged means they don't offer you support, for things that you would often use, like if you can't do something they won't do it for you.

A VPS gives you root access to all files on the operating system within your environment. You can tweak PHP, MySQL, install NGINX, xcache, mysqltuner, whatever you like.
Going managed means they will fix anything you break, as well as maintain the hardware. (If you choose a good provider)

They'll still offer support if something is wrong with the vps, it's just that they won't hold your hand all the way. I'd get a cheap VPS server for a month or so before ordering an actual one (or borrow one from a friend) to get accustomed to things, then go with un-managed to save money.

Yes which is exactly what I said.. Just in different words.. Lol.

As you are a newbie I would get a managed VPS becuase if something where to go wrong they can fix it in couple of hours instaed of you trying to figure out what is wrong and trying to fix in days

I would get a better shared host, at least you can do that until you know how to run a vps.

Managed is nice.
I have enough to worry about than dealing with an unmanaged VPS.

I am loving my managed host. Wiredtree

Well managed is nice, I wont argue but what do they do?
nothing special actually... they'll install your server with a control panel and stuff like that...

but I'll go with an unmanaged one... if you install cPanel, you wont have worry about anything because cPanel will do everything for you... you just need to set up the basics which includes the DNS and there's also Google for you, stuck on something? just google it 😀

I recommend you managed vps. I use managed vps too and i'm satisifed
