Do you market your online community to people you know?

Family members. Friends. Co-workers. Fellow students.

Do you feel that your community is good enough to market to people you know in real life? If not, why so?

I've tried introducing family and friends to my various sites, but they simply are not interested. I've done it through different ways, starting off with a message on Facebook, showing memes on my wall, and even going as far as showing them the site myself when I'm with them. I have this sense that there are people in life who don't like forums (why?).

The majority of sites I run I normally spread the word about them to my friends and family.

My family is very narrowminded toward the whole web development thing. In that case, I don't market to them. In fact, they would only know about some big wins I might post on Facebook.

I have multiple pages on Facebook and I have friends and family as followers. So when I post on my page, my content will reach the feed of my friends and family.

Marketing to those you know is a bad idea, in general. It reeks of desperation. It seems to be something newbies would be engaged in.
