Hi everyone - my first proper post. Hoping someone can help me, because I'm feeling quite lost.

I've noticed in the past week that I've been receiving a ridiculous amount of spam to my inbox. I have an external domain ([email protected]) of which I receive my emails through gmail.

These emails contain all different things - it's like I'm having conversations or sending emails to them myself. That's when I've found out yesterday that someone emailed me and told me they were receiving links to zips and links of a different nature being sent to them from my email address.

I've recently changed my password, but this is still happening. My reputation for my website could go down the pan and I'm really worried of any consequences.

I looked into dkim and spf records and different methods last year - and from what I remember, this was all secured and fine. I've no idea why this is happening now and could really do with some expert help to stop this happening.

Thank you!

Greg

Are you sure you have DKIM setup with a relay address and it set to Report or Quarantine? If so other email clients will block them (junk/spam) and you will get a daily report back from mail providers on who was using your email addresses on your domain name and where it came from specifically (headers).

Hi there.

I found out that my dmarc wasn't enabled - so I've enabled that, and done it with powerdmarc.com (not sure if they're good)

My DKIM has already been set up, and has been for some time. If I test my domain it shows it's set up with DKIM.

Not sure where to go from here really. I wonder if there's anyone I can pay to do a professional tune-up.

I’d recommend using this free service, and check what it comes back as (you are aiming for 10/10) - it checks more than just email deliverability so ignore that as the main point.

Uh-oh.

At least you found your problems! Looks like DMARC is setup incorrectly, SPF looks incorrect from a header standpoint from SpamAssassin.
Once those improve you should see that you hit the inbox more, and that you’ll be able to block or know if someone even tried to use your domain name to send an email from somewhere else.

Any idea on how I'd fix this?

  • mail-tester.com; dmarc=fail header.from=behind-the-mask.net
Thank you by the way! 🙂

Did you rerun another test after fixing SPF?

Scanning your record from a DNS shows that it’s valid record, so it shouldn’t fail from a quick scan.
