Maui Winter Storm '19

Maui is freezing right now and there's a huge storm passing through. It's been anywhere between 40 and 60 degrees lately. We have snow every year but this year broke records. It was the most we received in a while(3 feet+) and it started at only 6k feet above sea level. If you don't know, it usually begins to happens at about 10k feet above sea level here. There has also been a dozen boats that were swept to shore and there are a bunch of beaches that now look like the last photo below. The wind is the worst though. Trees are down everywhere, houses got crushes and there was an island wide power outage yesterday. Anyway, this explains the heavy rain lately. lol Enjoy the pictures.

It's funny how Hawaii is always depicted as warm. You'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a tropical country in movies.

Is this time of year normally a non-pleasant one (since Hawaii is known for perfect weather) that the locals know about? I have friends who live up in Canada on the Pacific coast who are getting the strong winds as well!

Wow!! I never expected it would snow in Maui. It was so warm on the dry side, and a literal rain forest on the wet side. Also, I didn't know you lived there! I got married in Kapalua Aug 2017 🙂

Hawaii is known for perfect weather because of movies that depicted it horribly. The weather is like this quite often. We definitely see this time of year coming, along with before winter. Both are storm seasons for us.

Hawaii is known for perfect weather because of movies that depicted it horribly. The weather is like this quite often. We definitely see this time of year coming, along with before winter. Both are storm seasons for us.

So when is the best month to vacation there? (not that I can afford it!)

lol Summer I guess. June, July, the usual warmer months. Don't come here though if you're not use to $10 jugs of milk and $5 loaves of bread.

I have no idea. lol I was born and raised here so the prices are normal to me. It's my girlfriend that points out the ridiculous prices for things. She's came from California.

lol Yeah. There are two "rich" towns. Kapalua is one of them. I would say it's less fancier than the other town though.

The snow definitely didn't get close to the water. We made history, but nothing that crazy. lol But it normally only snows at the top of Haleakala, which is at around 10k feet above sea level. It snowed all the way down at Polipoli though, which is around 6k feet above sea level. So only about 20 minutes into the mountain and not the usual hour and a half. Very low.
