Maximizing Profit on a Forum

What tips/advice do you have for maximizing the profit on a forum? Have you done anything in the past that turned out to pay off very well? What has not done as good as you thought it would?

I would steer away from AdSense - it's proved to be pretty useless for me so far and Google are a bit ban-happy with it.

Yeah, I have heard if you get the first cashout then your account is "safe".

You just have to get that first cashout without being banned 😛

Ad-Sense is great for blogs.

I believe if you really want to profit from forums, you can add a shop section where people can goto pay for software or mini games or apps that you could have available on your website that is for sale.

I make money this way:

On my forum, I offer the members to set up their own expansion. They can buy groups to then make their own private section on. They can buy upgrades such as awards they can give group members, a group exclusive theme and ranks.

Other ways is special groups people can join, on mine the VIP group, which they can join monthly, annually or permanently.
