A somewhat rare term which I've only really seen used on Wikipedia. Over there, it is usually used in context to putting forward testimonials for who would make a good moderator where someone brings in all of their friends or similar and basically tells them to sing praises about them.

Meat puppets are generally frowned upon and banned from Wikipedia, although a lot of other places are a lot less stringent about them, particularly as it can be a bit more difficult to prove than an alternate account.

I have seen a number of alts disguised as meat puppets however, like one forum where one user created twenty accounts purporting to be their "friends" when every IP check came back as it being them themselves doing it with very improbable excuses like twenty people going over to "their place" to make posts from.

Isn't that more frequently known as sock puppets?

eta: the first is basically just getting friends to suck up for you
& the second is sock puppets.

Meat puppets is an icky term, never seen is used in that context.
