I'm curious; how do you allow your members to have their account activated? Do you have your settings set to where after registration, the registering user is automatically activated? Do you have the settings set to where the registering user needs to verify an email notification? Or, do you have it where only administration can accept new members?

Same. Besides, when I have it on e-mail activation, half the members don't get the e-mail so I lose members.
I always have email activation if I'm using phpbb, even then spam bots get through but less often, go to a phpbb forum ACP with email activation enabled, look at the giant list of unactivated accounts, which 99.9% will be spam bots

I always have it turned on, just think its better and at least they have an email to remind them of the forum should they forget they registered but check mail regularly.

On phpBB3 an email still gets sent out even if you don't have to confirm the registration -😉-
We don't have any activation as spammers use in 98% of times a real email and can easily validate accounts. It is also a pain for new members.

The problem I've always found with using Email validation is that most Emails from TLD's get sent to the spam box of big providers like Hotmail and Gmail. So for that reason, I've always had it set to none.
Problem is though, we get a lot of spam here posted by humans for things like "How to rip a DVD to mac". In that case Email valiation only delays the spam by a few seconds instead of prevents it. To be honest as long as normal users have the freedom to post, there will always be some kind of spam.
The secret isn't learning how to prevent it, but how to deal with it patiently. ~smile~

I use e-mail activation. I use it because I like having members real e-mail addresses in case I need to contact them.
For a while I screened individual accounts myself, because since I advertised in my school, I had a ton of spam sign-ups. I've since turned that off.

I have it set up to where I have to validate new member accounts because I've been getting hit hard by spammers. I figure if a member is truly interested in joining, then they'll accept having to wait til their account is validated.

I have Auto-activation. 🙂
My forum had no activation until I decided to turn on email verification in case anybody signs up with a fake email, especially when there'll be a potential troublemaker that will come. If a new member doesn't get the activation email, I activate his/her account myself and send them an email and notifying them that I've done that.
