Members Online And Don't Post?

Does this happen to you guys? Members online but do not make any posts? Maybe they are busy or doing something else which i agree.. If they does it often, do you guys like it?

I know that, at some forums, people appear to be online, but they have been offline for quite some time. At my forum, however, I did not mess with the default settings, so members are no longer shown online after a short time. That said, members coming online but not posting inevitably happens, and my goal is simply to reduce the frequency of that happening by posting topics on a regular basis. Not only posting topics, though, but adding my own input in order to try to garner interest.

They don't have to post. You should feel lucky if they log in, let alone post.

Most of the time, people just get caught up with a phone call, or something more interesting.

I do that alot...

It annoys me though, especially when they take advantage of the chatbox and just use it. I had to even make a post rule where you had to make like 5 posts to get to use the chatbox for an hour.

I have to admit that did drive me mental, why log in to an account to not post? Most forums can be accessed without logging in if you only want to read....I do understand that people can get side-tracked but on my old forum the same members would do that day in and day out which suggests it was more than just coincidence. It looks good for the stats but I'd much prefer to see actual posts.

I usually have the tv going while I am on the computer.. So I can log into a forum then something interesting comes on TV.. So thats why I am not posting.
Either that or the phone rings, someone knocks at the door, etc etc..
No big deal. People post at their convenience and admin's should be understanding of that.

Yeah it happens, or you just have guests who don't register. They may be changing something in their profile or something.

Some people might just want to read a site but want to have an account to make them feel more connected to the site, to see if there are hidden sections only for members, want to get notifications of topics that interest them or incase they want to post in the future. They may even have signed up to post then decided against it and just use it to read the forum.

I am a member of some forums that i don't really post on any longer but visit daily and read. I can visit daily but go months without posting. The reason for that is because i don't feel like saying anything, just there for reading it, just there for downloads or i feel uncomfortable posting due to the forum being known for bashing each other.

This is a good way of putting it for many larger forums.

Agreed. I'm happy just to see names online. I wander off myself frequently.

Simple - provide them with interesting topics and posts that they can reply to. You need to keep your members interested.

Not many people pos ton my Forum, but the people who do post usually are extremely active. I don't mind if a member doesn't post when there online. That usually happens on all Forums. They don't have to post. Maybe there just viewing the Forum and were kind enough to rgeister. Maybe they don't want to post. Maybe they can't think of anythign to post. Maybe if you have a Chatbox, thats stopping them from posting.

True , Your trying to find if the topics aren't good. happens to me once in a while.
