Do you think any of your members scare off the newbies? It could be their beliefs, their attitude, their sexuality, their vulgarness, etc...?

It doesn't happen on any for the forums I own but I see it a lot on other forums and it really annoys me.

There are a lot of forum owners out there that agonize over SEO, trying to attract new members but haven't a clue how to actually retain them and that assumes they haven't already given up because they can't get past the CAPTCHA or the verification mail that never arrives.

I make it very clear, hopefully by example that every new member must be made to feel welcome.

On the forums I own myself, I can't say that any newbies have felt scared off by the current members on my forum. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly which I feel helps a lot if you are new to a forum and a little anxious at first.

I have to say that as a member on some forums, I haven't really liked how the owner allowed members to attack a group of certain minded people. It definitely scared me off and I don't want to return. Also, allowing members to be overly vulgar with sexual posts is not a place for me either.

This happens more than we admit. A particular forum I registered on, after my introduction I was accosted by two members for the profile picture I chose to display. According to them it is too religious and they want to maintain neutrality on the forum when it comes to religion.
I have not even posted yet!
I said bye. 👋

Did their site rules make a statement that they wanted to avoid religion and politics?

Sounds like they were back seat moderating and that is a form of trolling. No wonder why you left. I would have done the same if I was treated like that.

My forum is new so no. However, in my old community some new members, or members that were new to poker, losing players, would get scared to post their smaller wins, because they'd get laughed at, until i enforced a no bullying rule.

Yeah, I think it happens on forums quite a bit.

If you get regular members who have been there for a long time and they're clique-natured, they'll intimidate new members. If the old members have befriended the forum owner and contributed a lot, the forum owner will typically allow the cliques to occur. They don't want to lose one of their best members, right?

You mitigate that by being an active forum owner. You set an example and lead by example from the get-go. You set the tone for what types of cliques or environments you want to occur on the forum.

Basically, prevent it before it happens; otherwise, it will be a significant challenge to combat later on down the road.
