How do you deal with members who don`t read the rules

In my forum I do have a section for members to promote their forum on but some members don`t even check the rules for that section

I have pm them about it but never get a reply not even when I put their topic in Archives

So how do other Admins deal with this

Being a regular user of most of the forums around fp I just wanna say how could a user read all lengthy rules of each and every forums??Isn't it disgusting? If simple 2,3 points key points for all guidelines are there then it would be helpfull.... 🙂

If they don't read the rules, and they manage to break one, it is their fault because they should've read the rules in the first place. One thing that aggravates me more than anything is when someone breaks a rule and the first thing you hear is, "I didn't know that was in the rules!" Admittedly, however, I don't read the rules on forums myself, because the expectations are pretty much the same on every forum out there it seems like. However, if I'm uncertain on whether something I want to do is against the rules or not, I will use the rules more as a reference to find out if something is against the rules, but if I do read the rules, it's usually just a quick glance at them. I only really read the rules if I want to do something but am unsure if it's allowed or not. And of course, if there's nothing in the rules about an action I wish to perform, and I'm still uncertain, I'll either create a feedback thread or PM an administrator to make sure that what I want to do is allowed. It never hurts to ask if you're allowed to do something on a forum, as most rules only cover the basic dos and don'ts of that forum, so if you're uncertain on whether something is allowed or not, and it's not in the rules, don't hesitate to ask, that's all I can say!

I had a issue were lots of members were signing up just promote their I now moderate all posts so you must meet the 10 post requirement in order to promote your forum in our promotion sections (that was my old forum)

@AShely i read the same post four times 😀 😀

I know. The site was lagging for me and I accidently hit submit too many times. I'll edit it out so that it only reads one post, not five.

I dont expect members to read the rules as I know most people don't. As long as you post around a forum without being a disrespectful jackass, chances are you arent going to be reprimanded for anything.

On Wober, our policy is to send a courtesy PM to 1st time rule breakers letting them know which rule they broke and include a link to the rules for them to read.

If they continue after that, you know they are intentionally breaking the rules.

EXACTLY! Omg It's right in the forum description. What don't they get about it? Can't they see? 😛

Do I think member have bad habit of not reading rules?

Oh hell ya.

But I typically will provide a warning with a direct link to the rules & terms... After that... It's fair game.

The Rules I am talking about are in the forum promotion section

as my forum is not a promotional forum members have to do so many posts
ect

I thought you meant the board wide rules, that affect the whole forum. Although what I said and others have said could apply to sections that have their own rules as well. :great:

First of all, I'm a female. And secondly, I didn't copy and paste anything. It's just that when I went to make the original post, this forum was loading really slow for me at the time and I was getting a tad impatient, so I wound up hitting the submit button probably more times than necessary. I didn't mean for it to sound like a triple post.

Only time I've had to make someone read the rules at FC is once. I just sent them a friendly link to the rules page and then they were okay afterwards.

A lot of members don't read the rules because usually there's too many of them, and they don't want to bother. My advice would be to create one thread and place all of the rules in there, and place the thread in an introduction section.

Actually, I think people can be just as lazy even if the rules are straight forward and short, easy to follow. So really, rules don't have to be long for people to not want to read them, this can also apply if the rules are basic and only one or two sentences long.

If they break it, then I inform them about it and direct them to the rules. If they argue it, then I simply tell them that they should have read the rules when they signed up (which is located on the registration page as well).

Anyone who registers on the forum will see the rules, on the next page after the COPPA verification page. In order to proceed to the registration page, they would have to agree to the rules.

Now, I am very well aware of the fact that people will skim through it, and will just click that they agree without fully reading it, and if they choose to do so, then that is on them. If you are too lazy to read the rules, then that is not my problem.

Furthermore, the rules are very easily found, and even in staff signatures, and so, it isn't like they wouldn't be able to find them either once they joined the forum. I have a separate forum for the rules and FAQ, for that reason alone.

I did this, so that, people could easily find them, and they wouldn't have to worry about having to sift through a bunch of topics to find it, if/when they needed to do so, and push come to shove, they can always send me a pm, or post in the support area if they need further help.

However, they have no right to complain to me should they get in trouble later on for breaking the rules, and they can't say that they didn't know, because the rules were the first thing they saw before joining.

That said, they won't get any leniency from me or my staff, should they decide to ignore the rules, and sign up anyway. In the words of my fellow admin, ignorance is NOT an excuse.

I personally always seek for the rules when I join another community, even though many are very similar I've found some special rule here and there that would caught me unprepared otherwise, even for things I take for granted in forums.

I personally have been pushed to add more and more 'examples' in my three rules, so they have in their own become quite extensive, I'd like to cut down. I like bolding and underlining so people can skim through and retain the general idea even if the don't want to read the details.

I deal with people breaking the rules depending the offence, I usually PM them and depending their attitude is the next step.
