In very basic terms, basic meta tags are used to give search engines information about your site.

In other words, they are used to give other services information about your site.

Hi SD,

Your most important one you need to think about is the title tag which is not a meta tag.. so why the title tag? well these days search engines dont use the keywords... really simple its to do with a lot of spam etc. Your title tag will replace your keywords tag.. so how would you do this you ask?

I got a website for a book, so my title would be simple: BOOK NAME - £9.99 - OUT NOW,

as for the other meta tags, they are basicaly what they say they are... some things like copyright wont help your website in seo in anyway,

audience is all to do with the content on the website, you may have some language that is unsuitable for younger people,

Robots you should probably use this tag, you dont need to go to deep in to the others... but like i said your most important one when it comes to seo is your page title, if its one of these free forums i wouldent worry about it much just go posting it around,

and one thing you should look in to is link-to-link, this helps a great deal in SEO though it dosent sound relevant it really is.

Completely and utterly wrong, where ever you read that is wrong, totally wrong the <title> tag is used to tell a search engine the title of your page, that why it's called a title tag.

Search engines don't use keywords !! You'd better tell the person who designed the panda and penguin algorithm's that, because keywords are your most important SEO tool.

This is what I hate about Admins talking about SEO, they read a book off the web that is ten years out of date, lets put it into context, what Google did last year, but every book about SEO written before January 2012 on the obsolete pile, the Panda and Penguin updates completely altered the way Google indexes the net.

Meta Tags were made virtually obsolete about three years ago when search engines reviewed content, there is no real need at all for metatags now, but if it makes you feel good use them. If you submit your site to Google, you do not even need to use the "Description" tag, as you tell google that when you submit your site.

Keywords, Penguin updated the keyword definition to include what is now called "Key Phrases" that is sentences that Google use to index your site and rank it in organic searches, ( an organic search is a user entering a word into google and searching on that word).

Robots More commonly known as "Bots" come in all forms, there are friendly ones, unfriendly one, and really bad ones, one thing they all have in common is they steal bandwidth, you deal with them in various ways ( how much time have you got) your basic way is via a simple file called " Robots.txt" . http://www.robotstxt.org/, you construct this file in such a way as to allow good bots and "Dis allow bad bots, but bots are cunning things, and they can be programmed to ignore robots txt, so we have to get nastier, you can get programs called "Anti Spam" to stop a few, but these rarely stop the human "Spammers" to do that you need to block the address of the pc they are coming from, that is done in your C Panel through the "IP Deny Manager".

The best advice is to google SEO, and not ask people on forums who know very little about the subject, they are too busy doing post exchanges and leaving backlinks like confetti to really know what they are doing.

link-link, what the poster is referring to is a process called backlinking, pity he/she didn't take the time to explain it more fully, backlinking is the process whereby you leave your sites URL on other sites, now one or two backlinks are about as good as chocolate fireguard, so are a couple of hundred, what really works is backlinks by the thousand, and tens of thousand, that is serious backlinks, only just over 12 months ago, people used to use backlink farms to get their link out there, these were sites that would post your URL on thousands of sites for a price.
Then along came Penguin, remember him ?, over night he blacklisted every link farm on the net, he also altered the way Google ranked backlinks, before he was let loose a backlink from a high ranking site ( we refer to them as PR6 and above) would have given your site a boost, whereas a link from a PR2 site, would do little good, but penguin said that system wasn't fair, so overnight it introduced "relevance", so now if you a site dealing in "flowers" links to from other sites involving flowers will give you a higher ranking than a link from a PR6 site about tanks, you see what I am saying here.
Over night 100's of sites tumbled down the rankings.

Some sites for you to consider :
http://www.webpronews.com/
http://www.sitepronews.com/

Those are the two I trust most to give up to the date info from PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

By now if you have read all of my post you will have formed an opinion of who knows what they are talking about, it's up to you who you believe.

If I had my way, all mis-information on promotion forums would be deleted so that these myths are stopped in their tracks.<br /><br />-- 02 Mar 2013, 13:47 --<br /><br />

Agree on the keywords, that's a relic. That being said, I still include it as there are search engines that still utilize it. If you're interested in understanding SEO, I always recommend going straight to the source.

Here's google's page on meta tags. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bi ... swer=79812

Keywords are NOT relics, they way in which they are used has been altered to include Key Phrases

I think it was pretty clear I was talking about the meta tag. So please, get off the high horse.

In other words...

This seems to be solved, so I've moved this to the archive. If you have any more problems, just open up a new topic.
