Do you set a minimum character count per post on your forum, this is the least amount of characters a post must have before it can be posted?

Until recently it was 7 on my business forum, but I have recently increased that to 14.

I usually set it at around 5, not every post needs to be a ton of characters, and I'd rather just watch for consistently short post makers and deal with that as it happens.

I usually have it set to around 10-15 characters. It saves people making short and pointless posts and saves staff a lot of time deleting those said posts.

I don't recall ever emposing a limit before, but it's hard to say. Of course, we have members who are really good about not spamming the crap out of the place (sometimes) so really there hasn't been much of a need for this particular idea. It's something to think about for the future though.

I used to have a required minimum of 40 characters per post because at first people (usually those on post packages, exchanges, etc...) would post a lot of really short replies so I enabled it just so they couldn't make replies like: "cool, thanks for posting" or "great vid, thanks" or "nice find, thx for sharing".

But I don't have any minimums now because I haven't found them necessary to have. (If I did a lot of post exchanges though, I might turn this back on just so it wasn't so easy to drop short/spam-like replies. )

Thanks everyone for your replies. The character count of 14 seems to be working out pretty well for us at the moment.

I never had anything like this enabled on past forums, the members always posted decent posts.

Same here. During the six years I've been trying to run forums, I think I only had to get after a small handful of people for not being specific enough with their responses. Other than that, most of my members even now are really well behaved.

Haha was just testing if FP have a limit, but I was able to post nothing but 'No'.

I don't think the post character limit appllies to questions that only require a yess or no answer. but it would be another story right there if it was a yes or no question and you had to add something more to your response like why you feel the way you do or something.

It's got nothing to do with whether it applies to questions with a yes or no answer, it applies to whether the board is setup with a character limit. It wouldn't know whether there's going to be a yes or no question.

Ok, I get it now. As I sad I've never imposed a post limit before, so this is actually something new for me.

I set it to 20, i'm evil! But seriously i have to to prevent short posts.
