So I am wondering who here have an anti-virus app on their smartphones and which one they recommend?

Personally I don't but I am interested in it but know nothing about it so I'm open for suggestions, I have an iPhone 5S. 🙂

I'm curious... how important is it to have an anti-virus on mobile devices? I currently don't have one on mine.

I don't run a realtime virus defender on my Android. It just slows down my phone at this point, since my phone is pretty old. I run scans sometimes with CleanMaster's anti-virus.

To be honest, there isn't really a need to have an anti-virus on your mobile device, unless you're not cautious when it comes to downloading things, etc... However, it isn't exactly a bad thing to have an anti-virus either. You'll find the need for an anti-virus on an Android phone is high, because of the fact that the Google Play market is full of applications, and there isn't really a regulation system, anyone can throw anything onto the market, if disguised properly. It's a lot harder to get a virus on an iPhone, because they're very strict when it comes to the app store, and there are very few viruses written for any apple devices, if any.

It's actually better to have one than nothing at all. I personally love Lookout Inc. It's free for the most basic protection, it doesn't slow down your phone or drain your battery, and for $2.99 a month you get extra features in case you lose your phone or lost any data. (It backs it up, or, if you get a new phone, it'll transfer everything from your old or lost phone and wipe it clean, then upload it to your new phone like you never even lost it in the first place.) The best part is you can log on your computer and manage your phone that way, too. (You can even lock it and blast the person with a screaming siren.)

An antivirus on a phone is much more than just an antivirus. Also, when you look at it, your phone is probably the most valuable piece of equipment you own considering all the data, texts, calls, etc. that's on there. It's worth some protection.

So you mean features such as being able to remotely access your mobile device, is something that you have to pay for? Come on, even Windows Phones allow you to do that free of charge.

You might have sensitive information that is stored on your mobile device, but to have your mobile data stolen in the first place, you have to be incredibly unaware about your security and about things that you're downloading in the first place. Typically people are only going to download things from the application store native to their phone, or through applications such as Google Drive (example) - to retrieve your own documents. Unlike PC's, where you can go onto all sorts of weird and wonderful sites and download something malicious.

You're safe enough without anti-virus on your phone, to be honest, for as long as you're not an idiot who downloads random things from the native application store that doesn't look legitimate. Hell, it's even harder for anyone trying to trick you into downloading a malicious application, because developers will actually have a link on their website that directs you to their application, so you can't even mistake it.

Oh, and don't forget, you can secure your phone and PC's as much as you like. But hackers have shown that they're more than capable of breaching the security of ISP's and mobile network companies, even for the fun of it.

I do have an phone, but nope. I don't have one installed. that being said though, my browser does tell be if there is something wrong and it removes it for me. Does that count?

No, an anti-virus is a piece of software that is designed to detect and destroy malicious code; viruses that are on your device. Built in security features are not anti-virus. Your browser may merely check the security certificate, past ratings of the site, etc.. Users, for instance, on Google Chrome are able to report sites that they do not believe are legitimate, and they will be reviewed.

If an anti-virus still made it's way onto your mobile device, not that I'm saying you're going to download an application from the native application market that contains a virus. But if it did, it would have free reigns to mess with your device. But as I've said, as long as you're not an idiot, and you are cautious when choosing apps to download, you should find it practically impossible to get a virus on your device. However, if you're that concerned, get one.

I use CleanMaster and an app that comes with my phone that runs in the background. They don't seem to slow my phone down or affect performance.

I use CleanMaster and Lookout on my phone to provide the best security. It never found a virus but it is always better to be save than sorry.

You dont need AntiVirus for your Phone if it is an Android OS or iOS. All anti Virus for Android are to protect your PC not in your phone. 😳 😳

No. AV on your PC is to protect your PC.

AV on your phone is to protect your phone.

You don't need AV on your Android device, for as long as you're cautious, and you constantly find yourself downloading untrustworthy applications from the Google Play market.

Do you experience that your phone is breaking a viruses? or anything else? I thought, That the all mobile anti virus is the biggest Virus in mobile phone because if you install anti virus apps and your phone is running slowly and laggy!

Generally, these are a bad idea. Phone viruses are hardly practical, because software run on phones (viruses included) does not have the necessary privileges to do much damage in almost all cases, except for very rare zero-day vulnerabilities. Phones are an extremely well controlled enviornment, compared to desktop operating systems, where programs that run on the machine can do pretty much anything they want to.

The same limitation applies to anti-viruses. They don't have the privileges they would need to protect you from viruses either. Mobile viruses aren't a thing, so you're fine.

Back in my days of Android (mainly for anti-theft and not anti-virus purposes) I used Avast Antivirus. Now I use an iPhone trust that anything on the app store is safe. My advice though is if you are using Android only download from Google Play and to understand that anti-virus isn't very helpful.

Not needed when all I'm doing is looking up pizza joints and bad Chinese take-out on the fly.
