What do you do about moderators who abuse their powers? Do you demote them? Warn them?

I personally think any moderator who abuses his/her powers obviously cannot control being a moderator and should be demoted from the staff immediately.

It depends on how serious it is. If they're just joking around, I don't mind having a bit of a laugh, but it is very serious, or happens a lot, then I may demote them and/or give them a warning.

Depending on the severity of the action, the consequences vary greatly. I tend to give second chances, but it comes down the type of abuse executed by the staff member.

No excuses should be necessary. Instant demotion. Moderators are gived there power over a forum through trust.
If they betray that trust then as far as im concerned they are goneski. 🙂

It depends for me, obviously if I know them well I will give them a second chance, especially if it's something minor.

But if it's something more serious I will demote them on the spot.

It's always a good idea to hear the 'abusing' moderators side of the story.

If he truly was abusing, he's banned instantly.

Very serious offense, Of course i'd listen to both sides of the story, if the moderator is guilty, then he'd most definitely be fired.

I think if they do that they should be banned for abit and not be a mod no more.

Just to let everyone know, he is referring to the incident with him on here I think

This topic was quite clearly only started because someone edited your post to ''I fail'' here.

Personally I haven't really experienced this, all my mods do a great job 😀

Same here, I've never had any problems at all with any of the mods/admins

Figured that out as well, but it's still a good question regardless and causes a nice discussion 🙂.

My moderators often do a very good job. But I expect everyone to act disciplined. The duties of a Moderator are to be fair with their judgments, regardless if they hate another user's guts. And even my most arrogant (but still kind and good hearted) moderators know that.

Becoming biased in a way that abuses their powers will not sit well with me, and it will likely end in a demotion.

I have different things. One time, it was just playing around with someone he knew, so I let it go. But I told him the next time he did it, he'd be instantly on the members group, no retired staff for him. Also, the second time, I wouldn't allow excuses, I just check the moderator logs, and, if the demotion is not needed for some reason (correcting a link, but he didn't know it was correct, etc.), the next time, he's demoted and put on probation (lol).

I will not stand for a Moderator abusing their powers. They will be demoted if they do.

Abuse of the Mod power is the reason that a friend and I started up our own board to begin with. I will not allow it to happen on my own board !

Any member of Staff abusing power under my management will get demoted immediately. There is no need for it.

My mods cant abuse their power because i editted there permissions.
But Mods on other sites do, ive seen it first hand.

What defines abuse of power? Like if they are using their power to belittle members, unnecessarily editing their signatures, avatars, etc, then yes... instant ban.

A problem I've had once or twice was ''overzealous moderation''. A mod I had was having a bad day and suspended a member for a first time offence. The member was being obnoxious and deserved punishment, but not a suspension. I talked to the mod about it, clarifying what level of moderation I wanted in the community, redrafted my staff rules clarifying this as well... and since I haven't had a problem.
