Hello,

Today I am here to talk with you about a persona project I started a few months ago.

I took a forum script originally developed in 2001 and completely modernized it to work flawlessly on PHP 8.4 and the latest MySQL versions.

I converted and updated the entire codebase while carefully preserving the original design, layout, and visual identity, keeping the authentic early-2000s look and feel intact.

In addition to compatibility, security, and performance improvements, I implemented many powerful modern features typically found in contemporary forum platforms, including advanced moderation systems, enhanced forum and thread management features, improved usability, optimized database handling, and various quality-of-life upgrades all without changing the classic appearance of the original software.

Unfortunately, I can’t share a live link yet since the project is still running locally, but I’ll attach some screenshots below. I’ll also highlight a few additional features I’ve implemented, such as notifications, tagging, and more.

So, what do you think about this somewhat “unusual” idea?

Thanks,
M

Moved to Community Feedback per OP request.

It's cool to see Funkboard getting some love 😉

Cool, right? I downloaded the earliest version available from SourceForge 😀

Do you know if there's a way to contact the original developer? I think he'd be very surprised.

I genuinely don't. The original dev, Paul, gave permission to Collin Birch to keep it going in his version, but I don't know anything about where he went from there. I'd love to see his reaction to someone still tinkering with his script all these years later, lol.

It’ll remain as simple as it is, just updated with modern security standards and made SEO-ready. Today alone, I managed to implement all the metadata handling and URL rewriting. 😀 More and more is coming.

Absolutely, perks of the early internet! Keep it simple and you can't go wrong 😉
I am about to release the first working version, can I start a new thread so I can post step by step changelogs and updates? If yes, in wich forum?

I never heard of this software before! Looks like I've got another page to write on my wiki about forum software lol. I wish I had a computer back in the early 00's, I'm not sure how many forums I would have joined since I was a kid but seeing this makes me miss the simple days of the internet.

Sadly, I lost my archive… It also contained vBulletin 1.x and 2.x versions and I believe also one of the first IP Board's version

I had a similar archive, but the drive died. Lots of amazing forum projects stored in it.
