I was just going to say something similar, but you put it succinctly.This is almost certainly the result of the eradication of smallpox and the subsequent ending of global smallpox vaccinations in the 80s. The smallpox vaccine also protects against monkeypox so this outbreak is due to declining immunity. People aged 50+ are probably immune.
The virus is not supposed to be particularly infectious so I believe there is some concern about the method of transmission. On the positive side it's rarely fatal.

I agree with @Carlos X, there's really nothing to worry about. To date there are approximately only 400 confirmed cases and this particular strain has a very low death rate, said to be below 1% in poor, rural populations.
