The Chinese or whoever keep driving up the value for these silly domains - while good domains - are vastly ignored. I don't get it. How much Chinese cultural stuff is there to keep driving up these silly numbers?

I don't know if this is as widespread as you are suggesting.
Either the original seller (from your link) is still selling it (according to the actual website, it's still listed for sale on Dan.com) or whoever bought it in that thread for $18 is now reselling it. The current owner is Cyber Champion and he owns around 600 domains... Basically this user is someone who buys domains all the time & resells a few of them to make some profit. It's like fishing in a way... He'll catch a fish by reselling the domain eventually. I only own like 15 domains, but my business partner has hundreds - although he would never buy 616698.com or 66698 lol!

The original thread you shared is now edited to ">>>>>" meaning the original poster wants to hide what they said at the start. It's possible it never sold and they are embarrassed for registering/buying it in the first place.

Lucky numbers are popular in many cultures though, as are superstitious numbers (even if associated with 666)... So I'm not surprised, but I also wouldn't register a domain anything like this either. Numeric domains are uninteresting to me unless they're truly a magical or known number... 999, 911, 666, 123, 456, 789, etc...
