Yes, I think more people probably use Search like Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing, Paid Search like Adwords, etc to promote their website instead of using Social networking/Media to promote their forums, blogs, and other sites since social networking is still new to many people who don't follow internet trends while search been around for many years, and some people may think promoting their sites on other sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, e-mail marketing and Guest Blogging is very time intensive compared to search where you write good content, and hope other people link to your content out of good will or to use you as a source on their blog to boost your pagerank, and search rankings.
Plus, with social sites, you have to be social with your followers, or other members which can be difficult if you are a very shy, private and awkward person online, and offline. While with search, you don't have to be as social, or can be non-social, and still get okay to good results.
These days I use forums, blog commenting, guest blogging, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook to promote my sites a long with making sure my site has good SEO characteristics like new content, unique content, fast loading, descriptive links like example.com/example-link.html , but I haven't really been doing much back link building, optimizing sitemaps, and more advance SEO techniques since I don't have the time, and it isn't really fun for me compared to telling people about my sites on social networks, and other sites where I can have an actual conversation with someone with similar interests, and promote my sites sometimes.
