Promotion forums are a great way to start getting traffic. But unless you're able to rise up and find other sources to complement it, you'll soon find that you're running out of steam. Paid ads have always worked well for all kinds of websites, at least for me.
Sometimes it helps to look at the problem in a backwards way. Instead of "how can I bring members to my site?", ask yourself "if I was interested in finding a site like this, how would I find it?"
Signature advertisements on other forums - this might not seem like an effective way to get traffic, but it's worked really well for me
In fact, that's how I got most of my active members and staff members
But for this method to work, you have to be a good, active, and popular member of the site/forum that you're advertising on
And it also helps if the site/forum in question gets a lot of traffic/activity
Good point Cookie 123, I knew and admin who would leave a signature on every forum that they could, but never posted or showed any interest in the forum where he left his signature! :shake:
For me it is always Promotion forums and Post exchanges. Promotion forums is providing good users with quality content.
Post exchanges provided me with limited users as my exchange level is less.
On my biggest forum, google actually drives the most traffic to us every month. Then after that, its our affiliates and people linking to us/talking about us on social media. I don't pay for advertising at all.
Paid ads work for me, as well as promotion forums. I sometimes put some money into google ads a and I get a good amount of views, not registered users though.
For my blog it looks like I get most of my traffic here at FP but even more from Facebook. It's quite amazing to see the stats actually. I only posted like 3 of my articles on Facebook and it has ranked consistently in my top 3 traffic sources.
Wow thats amazing 98% from google and reddit. We all want similar results but you must be doing something to get that amount of traffic from those great sources, weldone.
