Personally I think this is a bad idea there are enough accidents with it at 70mph.
Now most vehicles can sit comfortably at that speed but some can't. If the speed limit rises to 80mph then most peoples speed is going to be 90 to 100mph that would burn stupid amounts of fuel.

British lane discipline isn't good enough either people need to remember that the 2nd and third lanes are for overtaking and that they should otherwise be in lane 1. When people can learn to follow the highway code then maybe just maybe a speed limit rise will be safe

Well in Germany, they have no speed limits on the autobahn, and they seem to have very few accidents, on it. But there driving tests are very strict they have to do night time driving first aid courses and lots more before they evening take the course, so it is much harder for them to pass the test.

I would love to see the limit increase. I already run 90mph so if they raised it to 80, then 100 would be legal! 😀 Of course once I get my truck, I would need to conserve gas more 😛

Now I can't source this but I know that in Germany statistics show that most accidents happen at speeds under 90 kph so raising the speed limit won't likely cause an increase in accidents.

see thats exactly the attitude that worries me.

The government argue that modern cars are far safer in a collision and can stop quicker. Yes that is very true but shouldn't we avoid the collision in the first place? The thing is the majority of the distance to stop a car is in fact thinking time. Which hasn't changed. The fact is you need more thinking time to slow down to a safe stop from 80mph than you do from 70mph.

The biggest factor affecting the cars braking ability is in fact the tyres. A tyre close to the legal limit will not be half as effective as a fresh one. Budget brand tyres are less effective anyway. So for this to be safe we need stricter legislation on tyre wear and quality.

The current 1.6mm legal minimum tread is in fact dangourous in wet conditions!

Now please dont take this as a personal attack it isn't and this after all is a debate

I have to agree with you classicdailies not justwhat you said but there is still to many idots out there that think it is ok to drive at 70mph and talk on the phone at the same time
I was going to do my driving tet but after seeing some of the idots who drive I changed my mind

You're saying you'd rather have these very idiots drive you around instead of having a license? 😛

I am a very bad passenger so always like to drive. But yes there are a lot of bad drivers out there and it is for us to drive all that more carefully to avoid them

Personally I think a zero tolerance approach on motoring offences would bring the rate down. You get caught speeding/on the phone etc once you lose your licence for a month or so. No fines no points just loss of licence

I walk to most places I go to or get a bus or train

Or they could increase the driver leeway (if there is any in your country). There is an unwritten rule in Australia (NSW) that 5km to 10km over the limit is deemed acceptable because speedometers prior to 2006 could be up to 10% inaccurate, meaning drivers could not solely rely on their speedometer. Increasing this leeway will mean drivers won't have that mindset of focusing on the speedometer when they should be focusing on the roads. Driver awareness is far superior than speedometer awareness. If all cars are going at 120km/h, then there's no real issue there, because you're moving in uniformity.

There is already a unwritten rule of 10% +3mph. So on motorways you are currently unlikely to get pulled at 80mph speed limit is currently 70mph. I worry though that people will apply this rule again and rather than cruising everywhere at 80mph they will now being doing 90mph +. That fact is at 90mph you have crossed the length of 3 double decker buses in just thinking time thats before you even apply the brakes. Now thinking times are an average anyway. Id like to think that I would get on the brakes faster than my grandfather. I drive everyday am 21yrs old and have decent reactions, where as he is nearly 90 and yes hes been driving 70yrs but his reactions are not as sharp as they once where.
