Terry Gilliam is set to produce at $US 8 million mixed-media adventure, set in an alternate 1884 London.
1884 will see Gilliam teaming with visual effects artist Tim Ollive to create a steampunk espionage story, set in an alternate 1884 where the industrial revolution has resulted in a futuristic imperial metropolis filled with steam-powered flying cars and the scientific advancement of mankind. Sounds a bit like 2004's Steamboy, from Akira director Katsuhiro Otomo.
The story will mix animation, live-action puppetry and CGI while the backgrounds will blend period photography, miniatures and graphics. Ollive, who will direct, says that the visuals are "not slick and sleek CG work, such as studios in LA particularly produce. It looks crafted by an artisan, and the scale and design are spectacular."
Some Monty Python members will be provide voices, although it has not yet been revealed who.
