I am looking to get a new portable music player.

My mum and dad both have Ipods but have advised me not to get one as I something goes wrong with it, it costs a bomb to get it fixed.

I currently use (dont laugh) a PSP  But of course its to heavy/big to fit in a pocket, so have to carry it around.

I want something small but a big library on it as I listen to ALOT of music.

My mate has a Zune which looks quite good.

I really dont know what to get.

Ipod?, Zune?, Mp3? Other? What can you advise?

Honestly, I don't know why you wouldn't buy an iPod! I've had mine for two years and it's still going strong. It's a great way to store music and listen to it. Really reliable too.

However, if you want more space for videos and a cheaper alternative. Go with a Zune. They're just as reliable, just cheaper.

I agree with Kino! I have an Itouch myself, I love it and it's great, haven't had any problems with it!! Keep you quite entertained as well 🙂.
But like Kino said, you can get the Zunes for cheaper..I'd go with the Ipod though, in my opinion!

I wouldn't even get an iTouch. Honestly it's a waste of money. If you want something for $300 then get one of the bigger iPods. Not a 8GB or 32GB touch.

My dad has an iTouch, cost him a fortune... But that was when it had just come out. Don't know what they are going for now.

Well, an Ipod and a Zune are media players.

I wouldn't get an iPod... they are so limiting. there are types of music files you just can't play on there, like .ogg file.

That's not a big problem for most people but, you know... which brings me to another point. It's proprietary hardware but again... if you don't really care about that....

I think many phones nowdays do a better job at managing music than devices like the iPod do...

My brothers iPod doesn't even have an integrated speaker and is useless without headphones and audio wire.

I used to think touchcreens were cool, then I was like "imagine the finger-prints!"

I know you are really into music so taking that into consideration...

I would something running android, which may seem like "too much" at first thought, but for someone with a larger music library... management is much easier. (I don't like the iPods interface personally) It's also much, much more customizable and you can play more types of files, run mixers, ect....

One file type I mentioned is .ogg, imagine .mp3 but with a better compression ratio, better quality, easier to edit and because to the enhanced compression ratio, you save disk space.

And I just know somebody is working on porting some of the great players in Linux for it in some form seeing as how Android is Linux.. It won't feel like it though.

None of the iPods have integrated speakers, they've been that way forever. Plus you can get a media converter for OGG files if you need to.

Yes you can get a converter but they are generally a bad idea.

Both .ogg and .mp3 are both lossy formats, converting them to something else usually degrades quality.

And you could convert them, but then that's not the point and you'd lose the benefits of using an .ogg file, those benefits (as well as it being an open format) being the reason to even bother using them anyway.

I didn't think any of them had integrated speakers but I wasn't sure and didn't want to assume.

Also not the point...

But anyway, they really should, it makes mp3 obsolete. But you wont see Apple, Microsoft and others supporting it any time soon.

Honestly to tell you the truth I'm not sure how the quality can be better than an MP3.

I'm going to have to read that when I get home. sounded complicated 😛

My sister has a decent Nano which she picked up for just under $200AUS. 8gb I believe.

If you only want it to store music, then an iPod should be fine. You should already have the software because your parents have them.

If you're a major music nut, then you could look at other products. Like DracoJesi said, iPods don't play a lot of music files. I haven't heard a major MP3 player distributor that plays .ogg (feel free to mention one if you have), which is a shame because the quality is so much better than MP3, plus it's free to distribute, unlike MP3 where you need some kind of license to use.

Honestly to tell you the truth I'm not sure how the quality can be better than an MP3.
Oh dear, you certainly haven't researched this much. MP3 is a pitiful format which should have gone out long ago. It's only still around because of the iPod's popularity.

Seriously, listen to a professional produced CD and compare it to an MP3 version of the same song. The CD will sound much clearer because it is no where near as compressed as an MP3.

I am using the few players which are favourite. I like KLM codec player, Jet audio, VLC player, Power DVD, Quick time player, Real player and for mp3 soniq player.. I am using these player which can support all the players. One of my favourite player for to listening the songs is jet audio because of Sound effects is awesome in jet audio.
