I have a problem with my computer laptop. It always freezes when I do something, then go to the start menu and it stays on the application or whatever like Control Panel, Notepad or whatever in Windows XP. I can't do anything after that! Is there a way to fix this?

It might be your RAM. I used to have a laptop with bad RAM which freezes. Maybe your laptop is overheating or the power supply is failing.

My RAM is 2 GHz and 2 GB memory. I just started up the computer so I don't think it overheated. My mouse still moves but I think the Start Button is the problem.

An epic amount of things could be causing this, your best bet is taking it in to get repaired

I'm going to try and scan it. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to update it because it needs updating anyway.

Thanks for all your help guys.

When my version of Vista to Windows 7 upgrade got messed up. I used Gparted to partition my hard drive, and installed a fresh install of Windows on the empty partition, so I don't have to recopy all my files to my fresh install. Now I have almost no problems with Windows 7.

It can be many things wrong with it, could be hardware failure, or an excess amount of trojans/viruses/backdoors running at one time. I recommend using MS Security Essentials to make a full scan.

Indeed, a reformat might be the easiest way to fix your laptop if it is a software problem.

Try reformatting your laptop.

That's more of a last resort if anything.

With 2GB of RAM you could be having problems if you have big programs that start up when you boot your computer on. For example if you had Skype, AIM, MSN Messenger, or any type of program slash widget that is starting up right away all at the same time.

NOOOOOOOO. No. NO. NO!!!.

Never trust a computer repair person. Last one I had said the computer would run slow, when it shouldn't after removing one. Obviously if you reinstall windows, it should run like new. It didn't, after smashing it to peices the other day because I was throwing it out and didn't want data stolen (and it was partly fun) I was taking the ram out as it is useful, and noticed one of the RAM chips was missing. The right side, he had obviously taken it resulting in my computer being slow.

When in doubt, reinstall windows. Keep back ups of all your files, and have a auto running anti virus on a disc somewhere.

Just because you got a bad cookie doesn't mean they all taste bad. Many of them are knowledgeable and reputable

It is best to check the "Better Business Bureau"( http://www.bbb.org/ ) or asking friends for references to good people to hire before hiring any type of handy man, computer repair man, painter, or any other type of self-employed business man since there are a lot of scammers and un-trustworthy workers who trick the uninformed.

@Jonathan,
Sometimes, one bad cookie just ruins it.

It is easier just to have an auto running anti virus on a cd and your copy of windows. Anyone can reinstall windows.

Scan your system with updated antivirus. May be your system is infected with virus or Trojans.
