There is a ton of speculation whether Mybb 2.0 is going to live up to be something people love or be a complete flop, or not even happen. What is everyones thoughts on the new software? 😱

(Here is their latest dev post: http://blog.mybb.com/2015/08/16/2-0-dev-post-5/ )

I actually cannot wait, it looks so much cleaner and nicer, and it's definitely not as bulky and busy looking. It's a much more modern take on popular software, and I cannot wait to see what kind of themes people make for it. 😀

I am however reluctant when it comes to features and really stepping up their game, the staff seem to be denying feature requests left and right. 😛

Cant wait for mybb 2.0 and also if anyone interested in reading I actually done an interview with lead developer of mybb on my blog here <snip>

I've always been a fan of MyBB, I don't use it for my own forum anymore but I am excited to see what the new version looks like. 🙂

I am cautiously optimistic.

On one hand I am intrigued by what features they've specifically mentioned so far as being part of the default. (MyAlerts is now a core module with @ tagging, there is a new attachment system being talked about with support for uploading to sites like Dropbox, etc... )

However, I'm also worried that because MyBB 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the underlying code that it's going to make plugin development much harder and mean that people aren't going to want to basically rewrite their plugins to work on the new system. (I mean even now with MyBB 1.8 being out for almost a year, it was released September 1st 2014, the number of plugins that have been adapted for it is relatively tiny.) So selection for plugins will be limited.

I'm sure that'll be the case. Lots of plugin developers stopped contributing to the project but their outdated plugin's could be made to work with 1.8, most of the time all you had to do was open a file & change "16*" to "18*" save and upload. You won't be able to do that with 2.0. Forum owners will have to wait for who knows how long or sacrifice features to be on the latest version.

I'm always delighted to see a forum software reach the next stage of it's development. I do have some concerns about 2.0. I use MyBB for my site and I've customized it to fit my site needs. Some features that are now plugins, should be default in a new release.

Will be watching it to see how it develops, but will not be moving to 2.0 for a while.

Do they have a release date yet? I'm still a bit skeptical as to whether this will be finished, as it's been taking them quite a while. 😛 I guess this will be interesting to see, though. I mostly used paid software, but I've used MyBB before, and it's pretty good.

A fair number of times, yes admins could modify the compatibility line... But even then anything that depended on prototype.js would still break (due to 1.8 removing prototype and switching to jQuery). Plus there were other small changes that rendered mods needing updates. (I don't recall what these were specifically, only that there were issues.) So it wasn't exactly a perfect or seamless update.

And that is what worries me about this upgrade and why it might not do so well. I mean are people going to want to update only to lose functionality they've grown accustomed to? (I wouldn't.) And how many people waited until Euan released MyAlerts for 1.8 before even considering updating? (I know of plenty who at least held off. I don't know if they ever updated yet or not.)

Cosmic,
There is no release date yet because 2.0 is still pre-alpha. (So it's still a fair ways off. Probably another year at earliest before it really goes to alpha phase. And at least another 6 months after that likely before it'll go into beta. I doubt they'd want to push it along very quickly given that 1.8 just came out a year ago and many people likely haven't switched to 1.8 yet. Even with the end of life for 1.6 looming closer.)

For what its worth, the migration from MyBB to Xenforo is seamless and easy. Members wont need to update their passwords, avatar or signature. 😛

It looks decent, looks like a long project though and giving the myBB staff's history in terms of taking ages to get an update out - I doubt we will see a gold version in quite some time. MyBB is still my favorite free forum software so hopefully they are able to make this one good and keep up with the times (for 1.8 to have launched without alerts and responsive themes in the core is terrible in my opinion)

Sometime next year I think, but they are still in the early stages of development so who knows, that will probably change like most release dates for softwares do.

Nice to see them use Laravel, but like Cosmic said, nothing matters unless they deliver.

The MyBB team has already stated several times 1.8. was just a minor upgrade, and that large features like alerts, etc. would be in 2.0.

I know that. I just don't think that's good enough with the time we had to wait for 1.8 and the fact that 2.0 is likely over a year away giving their track history and seemingly small amount of code completed for 2.0 currently.

Not really a fan of how it looks, and I don't intend on using it. However, I will keep my eye on it, as I am curious how development goes for this project.
