It looks like it's going to be very interesting. One feature includes URL re-writing built in. However, the time for completion won't be released by the company.
As a contributor to the development of MyBB (See: https://github.com/mybb/mybb/commits?author=nsuchy) I think so. However that's just me, some will want to stick with software made by companies, I believe in successful open source forum software 🙂
I've been following the progress of MyBB2 and I'm not happy. They've been delaying it in any way they can and never release a date for completion. It's turned me away from the product.
MyBB staff, to my knowledge, never promised it would be out by an exact date. It was, as far as I know, always a case of "it'll be out when it's ready". Especially since this isn't just a minor change, they're rewriting the code from scratch. This will have some benefits and some drawbacks. (Like most existing mods will have to be remade for 2.0 because the old ones won't work. But on the flip side it'll clear out a lot of the clutter/bloat that's built up over years.)
And speaking from my experience with release dates... If you give a date, people get really angry if anything happens. It's not even worth giving a date unless you're close enough to know that you can release then. (That basically everything else is done, things are pretty well polished up and it's just minor last minute details like touching up the theme to include as default.)
So just have patience. Or if you want to see it released quicker then get involved and help the dev team out. Even if you're not a coder yourself there are still likely things you can do to help out.
It does look good. I was going to use it for my site but was having some issues with it and the people at MyBB couldn't help me, I later found out it was due to my hosting alas, I settled on ZetaBoards but i'm keeping a close eye on MyBB2's progress as it does sound great. 🙂
