Both are considered top quality, easy-to-use, lightweight and compact and named as the "next big thing".
Which one would you suggest for a new forum? And if possible why would you do so?

What genre will the forum be in?

Well, the genre is not something to consider as a major factor. The average user experience(how user-friendly the script is), the ease to access the various features are actually what to consider in order to pick a suggestion.

@Nicholas After 5+years of experience with phpbb, you can see that it is not even an options 🙂

Ah ok. Well I wouln't suggest you use vanilla for a Forum you want to get big, so Mybb would be best.

Actually, I would consider the genre of the forum to be of importance. Vanilla specifically seems to suit some areas better than others. I think, for example, that Vanilla suits a general chat forum, or a debate forum. Mybb can suit any genre of forum.

No, just.... no.

Software doesn't matter, picking between the two comes down to user experience and what features you need. Other than that it really doesn't matter, people spend to much time picking software rather than actually using software.

Well, this "debate" has come up since its not an one-man project.
From my personal experience with phpbb, smf, mybb etc, i would go with mybb. However, the other guy suggests Vanilla for his own reasongs.
Imho, vanilla's layout is something different from the common forum interface we are used on and that "scares" me a bit. That's why i'd love to hear some opinions.
@death180
Picking software is a a procedure that is time-wasting, but necessary. Imagine if i setup something that i like, i spend money on it, and the customers can't use it or face difficultties which deter further actions. A complete failure and loss!
If i pick one that has all the features by default and is the least user-friendly? It's a complete mistake right?

You won't go wrong with either forum software as long is it has the features you are after. 😉 They're both quality softwares....

Still suggest mybb. Vanilla is ok, but for a forum you want to get popular you need the power of a full forum software.

I would recommend MyBB it is suited for most forums, and can be easily modified with a ton of amazing plug-ins that are easy to further modify to your own liking.

Depends what kind of forum you're aiming for, since MyBB is far more 'traditional' than Vanilla. Hence I'd say for most forums MyBB would be better.

MyBB. It really allows user more options, if you will. In Vanilla, the avatars are always small and you can never see things like their posts, location, etc. I guess I just don't like Vanilla period.
