Website Name: n.irc.su Social Network
Website link: http://n.irc.su
Description: n.irc.su is a new social network (like Facebook) that is uniquely powered by open source software and is non-profit. That means we're running n.irc.su just for fun 🙂

Obviously it's free and everyone can join. We offer the same features as any social network, so you can meet people, make friends, post on blogs, send and view photos/movies/files, comment and discuss things, play games, etc.

We started a new contest some time ago: the user with more activity (we have a measure for activity) on 1st September will win a 10GB space web hosting package with CPanel (I can get with Kloxo if you want). To get activity points (named "karma"), you post comments, make friends, invite people, upload files, and such.

Join us now! We're a growing community!

For me it loads perfectly. Perhaps it's a nameserver problem.
I'm using FreeDNS.Afraid.org for my DNS servive and it might have some problems with smaller DNS providers.

Try reloading my site and if you get the same error, change your DNS to Google DNS:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
With Google DNS it works for sure, unless it's not a DNS problem.

The free web hosting contest will end on 1st September, that is, tomorrow. Congratulations to the winner!

Now we offer free web hosting, based on the points count of each member. Plans go from simple shared to reseller!

The more points you have, the bigger and better the package you get. With CPanel! (Kloxo available if you ask for it)
To win points, you only need to do thing in our network like posting messages, uploading files, posting on blogs, commenting and such.

To be honest, I wouldn't join a website that states "we are just running this for fun"

I noticed you were running elgg... kinda risky. Or at least I think. The problem with using a script is the inability to expand and develop. Ofcourse it is open source, but it sucks because that is all the developers code you have to figure out and work with.

Honestly, Social Media is a huge internet industry. Your network must be one step ahead in order to succeed. I do not see that.

You only join if you want. In fact there are many sites out there running for the "fun" of running them without getting profit, and they're living strong. Yes you might think n.irc.su is a site that's offline half of the days of a week, but in fact we're already up by more than two months with NO downtime (100% uptime), and we have never shut down the site, without giving our users a reason (for example, when we upgraded the system, the site had problems for about five minutes during the upgrade, and we explained to our users we had to stop the site for a little bit).

Elgg is very secure, more secure than many custom small social network scripts where you can break in in about five minutes if you have some techincal knowledges. And, I don't see where you can't expand any open source script, provided that you know how to code (perhaps that's the problem, you don't know how to code), you can develop it further. And in the specific case of Elgg, it even supports plugins that you can download for free from the Elgg community, or buy from other sites, without the need to code. And usually these plugins are also GPL licensed, so you can expand them too.
I think I can affirm that Elgg is more easily customizable and secure than other scripts like jCow.

And no, the source code of Elgg is not difficult to understand. It might not be well commented on the code itself, but there are many documents online explaining how the system works, and if you have any questions you can also ask in the community.

And the step ahead of n.irc.su, apart from not "stealing" user data and activities and selling it to big companies, and the fact of having NO advertisements of any kind, is a step ahead that's still to come. We're thinking on big improvements, a new (custom) design and new features. BUT we need user feedback to understand what exactly needs to be done, and that's what we don't have now.

We're also thinking on having a platform to let developers write their own apps like on the Facebook platform, but this is not going to come soon because of two main things: first, AFAIK no one has done this before on Elgg, so the code must be written from scratch, which takes time (which we don't have right now) and work, and second, having an application/gaming platform would require an developer license agreement (DLA) which makes sure the apps are open-source compliant with n.irc.su, and that they agree to our privacy policy (not "steal" user data) and don't have ads, and I don't know how many developers out there are willing to develop to Elgg platform for free, releasing the source code of their apps/games - but I don't think there are many.

Anyways, having a full featured social network with support for custom application makes no sense while we don't have many users. If many users sign up, it might get interesting to have an application platform. But for now, not. And there are more important things to solve first, like the email being delivered to SPAM folders and such.

BTW, @The Hat Tipper, did you sign up? Or just went to the features page (which BTW is just a enormous page with the list of the features along with some static screenshots) to build your opinion?

Well, we (the admins) thought it was time to do some upgrades to n.irc.su, and now we'd like to present n.irc.su² (n.irc.su*n.irc.su, the square of n.irc.su).

n.irc.su² is the name of a series of improvements and bugfixes to the site. We have replaced plugins, including the messenger which is much more responsive and safe now (mo more common chat rooms), and we're also going to design a new custom theme from scratch.

If you have any suggestions for n.irc.su inform us now, this is the time! 🙂

Today I just increased the internal chat/messenger polling time so it is faster now.
Perhaps we're gonna use a XMPP server instead of simple MySQL and PHP. However, the XMPP server would be on a dedicated VPS.

We already got some sites using a "Share with n.irc.su" button, if you want to have one on your site too, I can give you detailed instructions, just PM me here or at n.irc.su.

We already have 3 admins at n.irc.su, and I'm looking for another one. More information at n.irc.su, on a thread under the "n.irc.su Site" group.

Somehow, we had a big amount on activity on the last two days... don't you want to join in too? 🙂

(remember, we offer web hosting for our members: resellers up to 10GB of space and much bigger master resellers available per request! 99,9% uptime, see the meter on g.ro.lt)

We have got another admin, dmmcintyre3. Now, the total is of 4 admins including me.

We pretend to promote more users to admins once more users signup.

One thing is clear: since I opened this thread on forumpromotion.net, the number of visitors and users on n.irc.su increased a lot and the site is much more active now 😉
We are also getting some people interested in our web hosting, unfortunately due to technical problems we had with one of the servers we use to provide hosting, some users could not get their hosting in time. We provide ffmpeg and optionally SSH with our hosting packages.

What are you waiting for to join this growing community? And you can use your existing Facebook, twitter or OpenID account to login!

You still don't want to say that, though. If you say that you're running it for "fun" clear as anything on your site, people won't take you seriously and may not want to join because they see that you're running it for "fun", they'll think that you're not taking your site seriously. I run a forum just for fun and something different to do, but when I do adverts, I don't put, "I'm just running this forum for fun or for the heck of running a forum" all over the place.
