Some of those obscure domain names have a very high renewal cost. For example, you could buy a .ninja domain name today for $0.99 cents but pay $59.99 to renew it when your year is up. At least with .com's and .net's you can expect to pay under $15 every year for the foreseeable future. *knock on wood*

Thats true and that is how they make money. It's part of their marketing strategy. However at least this means that the cost of you starting a site is very low and after a year, hopefully, you make enough to cover the cost of renewals.
