We might as well have a topic discussing a current event. As you may know, I live in a small town in Tennessee, and I’m just 15-20 minutes away from downtown Nashville. In a very bizarre set of circumstances, a RV exploded in downtown on Christmas morning. With a warning being played for people to evacuate prior to the bomb going off, it’s such a strange story. It’s terrorism, but it’s terrorism against our technology and our infrastructure.
Fortunately, the only fatality from all of this was the bomber himself, who has now been identified. Anyways, the whole situation has been nuts. As you may know, AT&T is the primary occupant of the Batman Building, and they are a major part of business in the Southeast.
AT&T also owns multiple buildings near the Batman Building, including a data center. That building was significantly damaged, which caused technology issues for people all over TN, KY, AL, MS, etc. Outages were experienced for anyone with AT&T service, whether it’s a cell phone, a landline, internet, TV, etc.
Businesses have been really harmed. Tons of businesses depended on AT&T’s internet for their card readers to function, so they’ve been cash only these last couple of days. My work (CVS) has shortened our hours across the entire district as a safety precaution while all of this has been going on. It has been crazy.
Some banks were also having issues, and had ATMs that weren’t operating because of this. You really see how dependent you are on technology when you’re suddenly without it. Imagine having money in the bank that you can’t even access because of something like this. It just reminded me that it’s always a good practice to have a little bit of physical cash just in case.
You never know what can happen.
