I know they're many tips on promoting a forum but I need the basic tips to help a new forum grow.

Mate there are many advertising forums, this being one of the better ones.

http://ultimateadverts.info (my site) and http://advertiseyoursite.net are few good ones also, both with around 16,000 posts.

Network! Make friends. Depending on the niche of your group you may want to get your close friends to join.

If your forum is about technology, join a local tech club and make friends with them, then tell them about your forum. Same thing for literally anything else (works online or offline).

And don't expect quick results. If results were quick, everyone and their mom would have a forum.

Make sure your forum's messages ar found by google, then people'll get to your site if there is an interessant topic where they are searching for.
