I've been on forumotion for a long time, but I have came to realize, it does not ALLOW you to download the back-up's of your forum, it's just terrible, I can't even log in to the Admin Tools to find the Backups because apparently my password is wrong, so if forumotion dies, every site that uses it dies along with it.
We need to move.
I like Jcinks and possibly SMF, but I want you guys to help me a out a bit, some of you are more experienced.
I'm pretty sure you are referring to phpBB, which you will be 'semi familiar' with, because forumotion runs a HIGHLY modified and outdated phpBB. I do recommend phpBB because it is my personal opinion that it is the best free forum software, but MyBB is just as good, and it's more user friendly. The choice is always yours but I recommend those two because I speak from experience.
SMF was a great software, I haven't had a forum in a long time (it might still be up there, haven't checked the URL in a while) but back then it was great. There was an issue a few years ago with the license and people that put thousands of hours into a software were getting shafted. A LOT of programmers and modders left after that incident and I stopped spending countless hours on their site offering support (I had a couple thousand posts, 90% of them were support) in mid-2009. After that incident, they haven't had nearly the activity they used to on the community forums.
LMAO WHAT SMF is one of the most secure along with MyBB... Idk where the hell you get your information but it is wrong. Infact last I checked both MyBB and SMF at their current versions have no known exploits.
@OP If you want to be able to perform backups you will need to host your own forum. As for which software you should use, I suggest MyBB and/or SMF. Both of which are secure, have tons of plugins and themes, and have a great community.
Also with SMF 2.0 they have become Open Source by being released under a true open license(The BSD License). Which has really resparked the SMF community.
