Need Opinions About A Contest

Hey,

I'm planning a contest for my forum. It will be a referral contest and I'm thinking of having it run for 6 months. Whoever has the most referrals after 6 months will win either an iPhone or an iPod Touch. There will probably be prizes for 2nd and 3rd place also.

I'm wondering if people think 6 months is too long but I think that since the prize is going to be expensive then 6 months is good. That's my opinion though, I'd like to hear yours.

6 months for what you are offering may not seem long but after about 3 months the user might start to get bored and not really bother with it. There is also a possibility that they might not believe that they will get the prize, but if your forum has a good reputation I am sure you won't experience that problem.

To your active members though, it might not seem as long as they are used to visited and posting everyday anyway so they could refer as they are doing there usual. For me anyway I would be a little put off by 6 months.

So what do you suggest I do? I don't want to get half way through the contest and then have it stop, but I'm hoping, as people start making referrals more and more people will want to join in on the contest and it will just keep going (but that may be getting my hopes up).

P.S. I hope nobody would ever think I would cheat them. If I hold the contest I will guarantee the prize that is stated for the winner(s).
