As most of you know, I run a Disturbed forum. I have about 20 bootlegs on the site (if you are going to post about the legality of this, please read this) and I have around 50 total. I am looking to upload more bootlegs and some of the more rare ones, but an issue has come up.

There is a competing forum that has a large YouTube Channel and a large member base, but is nowhere close in my SEO rankings. They seem to think that everything posted on the net is public domain and steal content all the time. Well they came onto my forum when I first posted up the bootlegs (sure the bootlegs aren't mine, but I asked that if one were to redistribute it, include the 33KB txt file that said that I was the one that uploaded it, and which site it came from). Well after I got pissed about that, I made it so that members have to register and post in the topic to get the link (also told me when I needed to update the links).

Well right now the forum is in a down period (averaging about 50 posts a day, sometimes less) and I was thinking of opening it up for everybody including guests. Daniel wouldn't have to update the links as much, and the forum name would get spread much more, though the transfer of the bootlegs. The only thing is, the rival forum will continue to steal the bootlegs (deleting the txt file in it), and claim it as their own to get more members and such.

Should I open it to the public or keep it just for members?

Keep it for members only. Nobody likes pathetic stinking stealing leechers.

Why not open up the forum to guests but block access to the videos for members only? It could be on a members only board. Additionally, the board could become unlocked to members with a certain postcount, so that they have to prove they're participants before they get access to the goodies.

Just a couple ideas.

I was just updated by a member of both forums, and they said that not many got stolen. I was banned from the other forum, so I cannot be able to tell the truth, but I think i'll keep them private for now. Thanks for your input!

I'd agree that making them available to members only is the best option.

You can keep it private or you can open it publically and edit the files to include where it came from, not that hard. Depends on the format though but it's easy to change from format to format.

Can you use a proxy to view the other forum you were banned from? Or do they only let members look?

I looked, and I could only see a few that they stole. Less than I thought, but more than what is acceptable.

Call a rip on your shizzle and report for copyright infragments and having underage porn and theft with illegal activities. 🙂

Will take them down for a little while. 😀

Lol this is a joke btw.

They're on forumotion and have tons of piracy going on. If you post an artist on there within a day or two they'll post links to the artist's entire discography on rapidshare. I reported them twice, and forumotion has done nothing...

So how are they a rival site then if their in piracy? LOL.

Also it's not that hard to do... anyone with half a brain cell can do it, all you need is google.

You know how I personally feel the web should be, open and available to everyone. I don't really love member-only sites, but I can see why in this case it could be helpful. If you ask me, promoting the bootlegs is your best bet, but you have to do it yourself. Other sites will rip it, of course they will, beat them out.

Instead of releasing your bootlegs on your site in a member-only section, promote them. Clearly others like them if other sites are ripping them, so instead of waiting to be ripped, put your .txt file in there and spread the links around the web. Don't limit yourself to just Disturbed sites, or rock sites, hell don't limit yourself to legal sites as 50%+ of file-sharers do it illegally anyway.

Take your weakness, the fact that other sites want your content badly, and make it a positive. Promote yourself, and your content, and while doing so promote (and thus support) the artists :great:

You know, that isn't such a bad idea. I'll probably just do it for the easy to find ones (in fact all of the ones I posted I didn't trade for), and the harder ones to find, I'll instruct them to visit my site. The easy to find ones are out there anyway, a Google search could find them, so I might as well promote my site with those.

Thanks for the opinions guys, I really value them!
