Hello,

I host a forum through a free forum host since 6 months.

It has 300 members & approxiamately 53,000.

We have been planning to move to self hosting.

But as we are unsure of the size / bandwith of the current forum we are unable to decide which host / which package to choose. We dont want to overspend. We are even planning to try free web hosting to first gauge the requirements

Can some one plizzzzz tell me what would be the approximate size & bandwidth of a phpbb board with 53,000 posts.

My forum is roughly the size of this board, & has 24-7 members log - in. But is has lots of smilies, pics, etc. Oh & btw, It is a girly chat forum so it is bound to grow...........

Actually , the info is not available at the forum's ACP

Code:
Database size:Not available

That is why I was asking

I will give you the information of this forum as this forums is similar to yours in size.

All together we use 152.78 although that includes our main forum, test forum, blog and some logs although we have recently cleared out alot of our logs to reduce this size. The main forum itself is 63.98 Meg including the attachments, uploaded avatars and so on. None of these figures do count the database size though so you need to add that on to it too.

Our database size is 24.82 MiB although we do not have a search index at all so if we did that would be alot higher and your forum would probably have one to start off with and if you decide to keep it. Altogether adding the files and the database together we use about 175meg of space.

For bandwidth so far this month (7 days) we used 2241.58mb of bandwidth. This is with Gzip off although if you have it enabled it will be alot lower but it will cause higher CPU load which may get you into trouble with your host. Last month we used 6.61 Gig although Gzip was enabled for the first week or so. The month before we used 1.27 Gig and that was a whole month using Gzip compression on the forum.

What i would recommend is about 750mb space atleast as that will give you space to grow and i recommend leaving GZip off and you would probably need 12gig or higher bandwidth just to give you a bit to grow although with lots of smilies and pictures you probably would need alot more bandwidth and probably a bit more space just to be sure. I would say get alot 20gb bandwidth and make sure that the host you use can allow you to upgrade to get more if you need it.

We are hosted by Cirtex Hosting and we have their basic plan which is $3.99 and you get 5000 MB space and 100000 MB bandwidth which is more then enough and they are cheap too. We don't use 1% of our space and so far this month we have used 3% of our bandwidth allowance so we have alot of space to grow so it might be worth looking in to as atleast then you won't have to worry about having enough space and bandwidth.

Hope this helps you.

Thank You so much Fowler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has completely solved my problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, TY so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You for your recommendation.

I am planning to at first try out Free web hosting to get a hang of things

& also to see our requirements & then spend money.

Fowler, is there a way to remove the search index?
Go to the maintenance tab then click search index then if you have search indexes that should say delete index or whatever underneath the type of indexes.
