At what points do you think you need to have people (other than the head admin) become staff members? I know some forums have 1-2 admins and 3 Mods from the beginning, but I don't think you need that. So at what points do you think it is essential to add staff members?

Basically, you need staff when you can no longer handle the load of monitoring the forum alone. Most of the time, once your work gets too hard for you to do, hiring 1 to 2 people can help lessen the load enough to help you gain back a normal balance of work.

Dentist answered it basically.

As long as you got the forum under control and don't feel overburdened, you don't need staff. As long as the forum grows, it will eventually get to where you do. I'd hire staff one or two at a time from there. You don't want to hire too many staff, that is a mistake many people make.

When the forum gets chaotic to the point where the main admin alone cannot deal with it all, then adding moderators is needed.

To me, I think the moderator position is not needed until you have about 100-200 members coming on everyday.

Summarised it pretty well. 😉

I personally find usually a Moderator per 50 members to be a good 'approximation', though this can change from forum to forum.

My forums are the ones which always lack a need of a lot of staff, but that's just me.
