'Negro' used on US Census Forms

I would take a wild guess that the people who thought of this idea didn't support health care reform. xD

To you.
Its not to me either.. But still they could have used a different word like "African American" or some other politically correct term.

This.
I'm tired of how everyone cries about this and that being offensive, being "politically correct" has to stop. This is just causing unnecessary conflicts.

"White Power!"
(I guess that makes me a white supremacist)

"Black Power!"
(No big deal there)

We get it, the United States screwed up from 1776-1866 (Forgot the exact year of the amendment), but it's really time to get over this. I hear dark skinned people (whether the term be Negroes, African Americans, Black, or N***as) call each other "Negro" or more commonly "N***er" so why is there a whole "I'm a black guy and you are racist because you called me ____" going on all the time.

"Negro" - The Spanish word for black. When used in a demeaning manner, such as "You dirty Negro" is is offensive. When used as a term to apply to some people, such as one may use the terms "teenager", "female" or "engineer" it is only factual, not offensive. Look at these statements:

"Joe is a ******* teenager!!!!"

"Joe is a teenager"

The first statement uses teenager as a demeaning term. It says it's bad to be a teenager. Substitute that word for "Negro" and the statement does not change.

@gomen: Some of those shortened variations of Negro are slang, so do have offensive value. It is commonly a demeaning term, rather than the name of a race.

I bet the only people responding to this that are griping about how little of a deal / non offensive it is are white people. 😛

I dont think its too offensive but they could have picked a better term.

Considering this forum's member base is largely based in the UK where most people are white that would be true.

If people find this offensive I don't know what to say. Most wouldn't care if white people were labeled as "crackers", of course that doesn't compare since cracker is a racial slur and Negro isn't.

It just means Black in Spanish  if they wanted to be disrespectful they would use something A LOT WORSE.
