Neopets (originally NeoPets) is a virtual pet website. Visitors can create accounts, own virtual pets ("Neopets"), and buy virtual items for them using one of two virtual currencies, one of which can be earned within the site and the other of which can purchased with real-world money. Neopets operates a pay-to-play version, Neopets Premium and sells Neopets merchandise.

Neopets allows users to create and care for virtual pets called Neopets and explore the virtual world of Neopia. There is no set objective for the users, but they are expected to feed and care for their Neopets when they grow hungry or ill, although Neopets will not die if neglected. Neopets come in a variety of species and colors and users can create or adopt their own. Users can obtain items to interact with their Neopet, such as books to read and toys to play with them. Neopets can be customised with certain clothing items, paint brushes, and accessories. Users can build a customisable Neohome for their Neopets and furnish it with furniture, wallpaper, and flooring. Neopets can battle against other Neopets or non-player characters in the Battledome but they cannot die there.
A customisable Neohome.

Neopia is a virtual planet with fantasy lands inhabited by Neopets and other virtual creatures. Each land has a different theme, such as pirates or prehistoric times, and their own shops, games, and attractions. Neopia follows its own calendar and timezone, which runs concurrent with real-world Pacific Time, and has tie-ins with certain real world holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. It has its own economy and stock market based on Neopoints. Users can earn Neopoints through various means including playing games and selling items, which can be invested or used to buy various virtual goods and services. While there is no set objective for users, interactive storylines are sometimes released that introduce changes to the planet such as new lands.

I have been playing this game for coming up to 11 years. People think it is a kids game, but there are alot of older users too.

These are my Neopets:

Set Abominae (I've tried to recreate Iced Earth's mascot)

Anyone else play? Or played in the past?

I used to play it, but eventually got bored of it and was also spending way too much time on it because I believed your pets could actually die if you didn't look after them.

I will be honest, I have never heard of it until now. Additionally, I have no interest in such a game. It's just not my kind of thing. 🙂

Oh man... I've just recently started messing with my Neopets account again. I spent a lot of time on this site when I was younger. lol Any other Neopets users here?

I never played online, however I loved getting the little stuffed animals for it. 😛 I was way to young to start playing online at the time of me liking neopets. :\

I played this when I was very young. It was pretty sweet and I loved that money tree, or present tree. I can't remember what the tree was called, but I liked it and I enjoyed exploring the game with my brother.

I never really got into the game. Like I had seen it before and stuff but never actually got to playing it.

I've played for around 8 years now, got on and off, but I'm still playing. It's not as populated as it was a few years before (which is an understatement). It has changed ownership and they haven't worked out many things yet, but it still runs.. somewhat.

Have there been any changes that have made the game playable for 8 years? That's a long time to be playing any game and NeoPets isn't well known for being a large game...I can imagine you've pretty much completed all the available content.

I have an account on there that's 11 years old but I don't play it too much. Sometimes I'll get a random urge and play for a few days but then I'll drop off and won't touch it for months/a year XD

I'm interested about your comment about a large game, could you please elaborate?

No, I don't really see any truly principal changes to the Neopets since I first started playing. Though actually I'm nowhere near done with any of the content. Maybe it's because I'm taking it easy and not playing it very passionately. There were plots and events from time to time, updates, new mini games and stuff, but they're not really why I stick around. The site is just like a second, more laid back life for me, I guess? Where I could collect things when I feel like it, go to the virtual bank and be told that I'm rich, or just lurk around the boards and chat with random people when I don't feel like working on my account's worth.

I heard people who stick around usually are the kind that choose one aspect of the site they like to focus on and work on, like collecting avatars (badges given for various site-related activities), train pets and battle with other people, or create a gallery where they collect a certain theme of in-game items. When they reach their goals (or get bored doing it) they just pick another thing to do. There are regular updates and new contents, so some goals are virtually never-ending. Never really heard anybody who's on top of every single thing on the game, since it caters to a broad spectrum of interests.

Personally Neopets is like a safe haven for me, because of it's strict kids-friendly policy, especially for the all the player-to-player interactions. Curse words, 'hot/adult' topics (politics, religion, romance, etc), and giving out personal information is prohibited, so Neopets is perfect for me when I want to run away from real world happenings. It's kind of a turn-off for many (older) people, though, since the filters can be unfathomably paranoid. Although it should be noted that despite of how it looks, most of the players on the site (the ones who can get to the chat boards anyway) are adults. The more complicated contents of the site is hard to do for 8 years old children, I think, so I understand that it can easily be boring for kids. Not to mention that it's the kind of game where you build relatively slowly and not the kind where you can see instant changes.

I mainly play the stock market and maintain my shop. Occasionally I seek out newbies and buy everything in their shop to make them feel good. lol I have millions of Neopoints.

I only buy the 1 neopoints items to work on the avatar that requires me to dump thousands of items to get it. I do clear up newbie shops if it's small too, from time to time though. I suspect I feel good more than they do 😛

There is truth to what you said there. 😉 It's nice to get a message saying "OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU MADE MY DAY!" lol
