Does anyone have their own network attached storage/cloud? If so, how does it compare to online storage/cloud space in your opinion?

I am planning on buying network attached storage soon, so that I can be on any of our computers and laptops in the house, and be able to use the same file from any one of the devices.

I used to have an OwnCloud server on my local network, although I think the computer has been long since re-purposed. Most of my stuff is in iCloud. I do recommend OwnCloud, though. It's very good, and does Calendars, etc. as well as files.

I use OneDrive and I have a Synology 415Play it has 12TB of storage though I mainly use that to backup my music and steam games, they're really good!

With the way that everything is moving towards streaming services, I don't see much use for a large amount of storage. Back in the day it made sense to have a large amount of video/music content but it's not like that anymore really. I just need enough storage for all my games and that's it.

I mean, cloud storage is useful for going to different devices but that's it for me.

My upload speeds are under 0.5 Mbps making any kind of self-hosted online storage at home very slow compared to using online storage sites like Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive with faster upload, and download speeds.

I'm also concerned about the higher electricity and bandwidth usage of a Network Attached Storage / Personal Cloud server being on for most of the day. Plus, the hard drive, and other stuff may not last as long if I leave them on all day.

I also rarely need to access my files at home when I am away from home.
