Me and my friend are thinking of starting a new business. You see, he's great at art and comics so our idea is he makes a few different comic series' and I make a subscription only website.
So people would pay for one of three different memberships:
Basic
Gold
Ultimate
Basic would give them access to 3 different series'
Gold would give them access to 5 different series' and bonus content
Ultimate would give them access to 6 different series', bonus content and they get all comics a week earlier.
I like the idea but I would have to agree with InRomoWeTrust. Unless your friend is very well known or has amazing talent, why would people pay to view his comics? There is a huge amount of content available free on the web, so you really have to ask, why would people pay for yours.
Go for it by all means, but give some serious thought to why people would pay for it and to who those people are, i.e. your target market.
This is what I think could expand your idea even more.
Let everyone view them for free.
Let subscribers get some of the series earlier than others.
Let subscribers have a chance to have themselves in the series (whether it's a name, outfit, or whatever - it's them).
The only reason I can see your idea having some troubles is that many people won't hear about you, which is even harder because people must pay to see the series.
Also offer an ad free experience for subscribers. But don't shaft everyone else by jamming the site with as many flash ads as you can so the site loads at a crawl.
